SISCAP focuses on Latin solidarity The group was formed to increase activity in C1SCAP By Laura Baker Oregon Daily Emerald A new activist group has joined the ranks of ASUO recognized organizations. Students in Solidarity with the Central American People recently received ASUO approval for student group.status. SISCAP’s Eugene parent organization is the Commit tee in Solidarity with the Central American People. CISCAP member Melanie Jones said both organiza tions are activist groups that work for international is sues such as human rights, peace and justice. They also work for a greater under standing of the govern ment’s role in these issues. The new student group was formed to increase stu dent involvement in the parent group, said SISCAP member Dana Shabica. The two groups work closely on similar issues. Both groups are “grass roots organizations that are working toward creating a greater cross-border solidar ity network and passive re sistance to governmental and military control,” Shabica said. The organizations are concentrating their efforts in creating solidarity with groups in Mexico, Cuba and Central America. CISCAP works with groups such as Frente Autentico de Liber tad, an indigenous rights group in Mexico. Shabica said CISCAP is currently focusing its ener gy on the Zapatista revolts in Chiapas, Mexico, and the damage done to agricultur al land due to flooding in September. The Zapatistas are mainly campesino workers from Chiapas who began to revolt against the Mexican govern ment in 1994 after the sign ing of NAFTA. "We’re trying to create a bigger solidarity network between the United States and Latin American coun tries,” Shabica said. CISCAP and SISCAP give the Eugene community an opportunity to learn about what is going on in the world and in cultures “that are just next door,” she said. Meetings are currently being held on the second and fourth Monday of every month at the CISCAP office at 458 Blair. To find out more infor mation about joining either organization call 485-8633.
