University presidents given raises Pay will be tied to performance for the leaders of Oregon schools By Teri Meeuwsen Oregon Daily Emerald University President Dave Frohnmayer received a six per cent pay raise in July, but pay rais es in the future will be tied to how well he performs his job. Frohnmayer, the six other state public university presidents and the chancellor of the board re ceived pay increases and will see a new evaluation process next year. The State Board of Higher Edu cation heard the changes and saw the final pay numbers at a meeting on Friday at the University, de scribing the pay raises and the way university presidents and the chancellor of the board will be evaluated in the future for pay in creases. “This is a part of an overall ef fort to make the system more re sponsive and more driven,” said Phillip Bransford, Oregon Univer sity System spokesman. Beginning next July, the presi dent of each state public universi ty will submit a list of goals and objectives for the coming year to the chancellor, Bransford said. The plans will include how the institution plans to achieve the goals and strengthening and im proving cooperation between the institutions. Frohnmayer may use input from the Eugene community, alumni and others outside the ad ministration structure, Bransford said. Then, in May of the same year, each president will submit a writ ten self-assessment of goals that have been met, areas of needed improvement and work remain ing to be carried over to the next year. At the same time, a suggested plan for continuing professional development will be proposed for the coming year. “This is a new way of linking pay with performance,” Bransford said. “This will be very sensitive to each university's performance.” In the past, the only kind of evaluative process for the presi dents was sporadic, he said. The pay raises will come in two parts. While the first part is al ready in affect, the second will be come effective in February. Frohn mayer and the presidents of Oregon State University and Port land State University will receive total raises to $138,000. Chancellor Joe Cox will get a raise from $133,000 to $141,808. Presidents of Western, Southern, and Eastern Oregon universities and of the Oregon Institute of Technology will get raises to $110,338. The board is “in agreement that Chancellor Joe Cox and the seven presidents have performed above and beyond expectations and at high-levels of excellence, and de serve merit increases,” according to the meeting docket.
