Police said the two men lured Shepard from a campus bar by telling him they were gay, intend ing to rob him. “Things like this happen all the time. Sometimes they're seen, and sometimes they're not," said Mul ticultural Center program advo cate Huy Ong. ASUO President Geneva Wort man said the incident reflected on all college campuses because it could have happened anywhere. “Let tonight be the beginning of something better,’’ Wortman said. Mary' Gautreaux from Sen. Ron Wyden’s office and Alan Brown, a gay activist and campaign direc tor for Rep. Peter DeFazio, empha sized the need for federal anti hate crime legislation. “If you are an American, you suffered in the streets of Laramie last week,” Gautreaux read from Wyden’s letter. Currently there are 18 states, in cluding Oregon, with anti-hate crime laws that cover offenses based on sexual orientation. “Gays and lesbians have been stalked for many years now by cer tain organizations. Some of these organizations say their hands are clean. They say this has nothing to do with them,” said Harriet Mer rick of Basic Rights of Oregon. Merrick invited the crowd to at tend a meeting at Central Presby terian Church, located on 14th Avenue and Ferry Street, on Oct.15 at 8 p.m. to discuss these and other issues. Larson and Carnahan helped organize the event with speakers that also included representatives from Parents, Friends, Families of Lesbians and Gays: the Koinonia Center; the Multicultural Center; LGBTA: and ASUO. Students expressed poems and testimony expressing their fear and anger as the rain stalled to fall on the group. “These are concerns of our soul,” said ianet Cromwell of the Wesley Center, part of the Cam pus Interfaith Ministry. “The core of us needs to be loved and re spected. to be known and cared for because of who we are." The only time the two have spoken at length, he said, they discussed their love for primates in addition to their passion for the research. Simonds said Goodall reacted positively, saying, ‘“You do get it, don’t you?”' Goodall earned her Ph.D. in ethology from Cambridge Univer sity in her native country of Eng land. Then, 17 years after first traveling to Tanzania, East Africa, to venture into the African forests, Goodali founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation in 1977.
