Student Senate elects its officers By Kristina Rudinskas Oregon Daily Emerald The ASUO Student Senate elected its officers at Wednesday night’s meeting and voted that all nine academic senators would at tend University Senate meetings. The winners are: Michael Ol son, Student Senate president; Wylie Chen, senate vice presi dent and fereme Grzybowski, senate ombudsman. "We all need to take on respon sibility,” Olson told the senate. “It's like a sailboat versus a tug boat. On the sailboat, everyone has a job, instead of a tugboat where we shovel coal onto the fire.” Olson suggested the senate be more visible on campus and pro posed to create a newsletter. “We could tape them up in bathroom stalls, so they [stu dents] can share that proud mo ment with student government,” he said. Olson said this year's senate has renewed commitment and dedication to fighting for student needs. “Sometimes last year we tend ed to be very bureaucratic and got entangled in rules — not see ing the gold at the end of the rainbow," Olson said. “It’s easy to lose sight of the goal.” The senate plans to work in co ordinated campaigns with the ASUO Executive. “We want to make solid ad vances for students as a whole,” Olson said. The senate also voted to strike a senate rule Senator Selena Brewington retrieved from last year’s computer crash. The rule stated that faculty could not use EMU facilities unless all nine academic student senators were able to sit and vote on the Uni versity Senate. Currently, only five student senators are able to vote in the University Senate. “Tfying to hold an ultimatum over the University Senate is not a mature or efficient way of deal ing with the senate," Senator El liott Dale said. The University Senate, a group of faculty and students who help steer University policy, meets once a month. The Student Senate is starting its grievance table hours next week. Senators will be staffing a table in front of the University Bookstore. Students with any questions, concerns or com plaints should stop by and fill out a grievance form. “1 think we’ll have a really good year. The ASUO is looking strong, and I’m glad the senate is up and running full force," Olson said.
