Campus Arts Faire debuts Saturday The Faire will offer everything artistic from swing dancing to poetry By Ben Romano Higher Education Reporter The University will showcase a wide variety of arts programs in the first ever Campus Arts Faire to be held Saturday. “The Eugene-Springfield community and alumni aren’t aware of how professional and exciting the arts community is here," said Jeffrey Knoche, assis tant director for community out reach and the coordinator of the Campus Arts Faire. The University campus will offer everything artistic from swing dancing to poetry from noon to 5 p.m. “We want to familiarize peo ple with the interdisciplinary nature of art,” Knoche said. In addition to having arts on display, the Campus Arts Faire will offer a variety of opportuni ties for people to get their hands on art. Participants can help cre ate a community chalk mural, make rain sticks, experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremo ny or learn how to play a recorder, Knoche said. University students are en couraged to participate as well, Knoche said. “I think it’s a great opportuni ty for the internal campus com munity to take a sample of what is available,” she said. The idea to have a day to open up the University arts programs to the community was a long time coming, said Anne Dhu McLucas, dean of the School of Music since 1992. “I have been promoting it with various arts groups,” McLucas said. “The arts deserve a hearing in a visible way, the way sports do.” She said she hopes the event will be an “arts homecoming,” with large numbers of alumni coming to campus and interact ing with the student artists. Information and maps will be available on the lawn by the Pio neer Mother statue near the cor ner of Johnson Lane and Univer sity Street, Knoche said. The Museum of Art will hold a large number of activities. The University’s Pacific Rim Game lan Gong Orchestra, a tradition al Balinese percussion group, will perform seven or eight new pieces throughout the afternoon on the lawn in front of the mu seum, Candidates for the Master of Fine Arts degrees in creative writing will read examples of their work, she said. Two theatrical performances at Villard Hall by University thespians will cap off the after noon. A student collective will per form “Brown Bag Lunch” in the Pocket Playhouse at 5:00 p.m. There is a $1 suggested donation for this performance. At 8:00 p.m., University The atre members will perform William Shakespeare's ‘‘Two Gentlemen of Verona.” Tickets will cost $9 for the general pub lic; $7 for senior citizens, Uni versity faculty and staff and non-University students; and $4.50 for University students, Knoche said. All of the other events will be free. Ritta’s Burritos and Universi ty Catering will have food and beverages available. There will also be picnic tables for people who bring their lunches. Free parking will be available in University lots around cam pus; however, meter parking spaces will be enforced.
