Ducks: Cook gets nod for Game 1 ■ Continued from Page 11A shutouts. However, that doesn’t seem to be a concern for Oregon’s players. “The losses don’t mean any thing to us now,” designated hit ter Triawn Custer said. “We don’t seS it as a negative thing, just a learning experience. One constant throughout the sea son has been pitcher Jennie Cook, who led the Ducks with 20 wins and 92 strikeouts in more than 242 innings. Along with her team-low 2.77 earned run average, Cook ranked second on the team with seven home runs. She will get the Game 1 start against the Hawkeyes. He has also provided much of the technical support for the program, which has ac cumulated a 90-46-4 record during his coaching tenure. That played a big role in the decision to hire Kearney, ath letic director Bill Moos said. “We had an outstanding group of candidates," Moos said. “But when it came down to the final four, Chuck’s expe rience with the program played a significant part in the decision.” As a wrestler, Kearney placed fifth at 177 pounds in the NCAA Championships in 1988 and was named Oregon’s most valuable wrestler before earning a bachelor’s degree in leisure studies and services from the University in the spring. The former Pacific-10 Conference champion accu mulated 60 wins in only two seasons at Oregon after com peting his first two seasons at Oklahoma State.
