Mud slinging AMANDA COWAN/Emerald University President Dave Frohnmayer, Geneva Wortman and Bill Miner break ground for the new University of Oregon Recreation and Fitness Center on Monday morning. ODE board selects summer editor ByTeri Meeuwsen Higher Education Editor The Oregon Daily Emerald won’t be going on vacation this summer — not with the new editor in town. Michael Hines, a junior, was named summer editor in chief at the Emerald Board of Directors meeting Tuesday. “I’m pretty excited,” Hines said. “I can’t wait until the summer starts. It will be fun picking up where Sarah left off and passing on the paper to Ryan. ” Sarah Kickler is the current edi tor in chief and Ryan Frank is the 1998 editor-elect. “I think I’ve got experience and determination, and I’m really ex cited to do this, ” he said. Hines has been a student activi ties reporter for the Emerald since June 1997 and has also worked part-time at The Register-Guard as a sports worker since September. He is in the magazine sequence in the School of Journalism and Communication but is talcing some news-editorial classes as well. “The board was very pleased with all of the candidates,” said Hol ly Sanders, vice chairwoman of the board. “But Mike was an outstand ing candidate for the position. His journalism experience and commit ment to the Emerald make him an ideal candidate for the summer edi tor in chief." A summer editor-in-chief posi tion was created in response to this year’s internship situation, Kickler said. “When the board was in the process of hiring for the position for next year, both candidates had pri or commitments to summer intern ships,” Kickler said. “The board de .cided it would be in the best interest of the paper to hire some one separately for the summer edi tor position.” The nation’s best MCAT prep is coming to Eugene Let The Princeton Review help you to prepare for the MCAT!
