- ■, , „__ .. -.\.: w I NICK MEDLEY/Emerald Oregon ’sjody Mortimore will look to secure an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump dur ing the Ducks ' dual meet against Washington on Saturday. Men: Distance runners key for UO tt Continued from Page 11 good in areas where we’re thin, so I think it’s going to be a real close meet and we’re going to have to compete real well on their home turf to win it." The Ducks and Huskies will be facing each other for the second time this season, the first matchup coming when Oregon held off Washington 210-175 to win the Pepsi Team Invitational on April 18 at Hayward Field. Based solely on the teams’ best marks this season, Dellinger said the Huskies “go 1-2 in the 100, 200, 400 and high hurdles. They win the shot, discus and javelin, so we have our work cut out for us — and they win the 1,500 with best marks.” If form charts hold up — al though they rarely do—the Ducks will need strong performances from, among others, the likes of Micah Davis in the steeplechase, freshman Adam Bergquist in the 5,000 meters, Gregg Bleakney in the triple jump, Jody Mortimore in the long jump, Piotr Buciarski in the pole vault and Damian Olson in the high jump. Davis, who has an NCAA provi sional qualifying mark of eight minutes, 45.08 seconds in the steeplechase, said the pressure is on Oregon’s distance runners this week. “We’ve got to go up there and win all those [distance] races if we’re going to have a shot at all,” Davis said. “Then there’s going to have to be guys that are going to have to step up and try and beat these guys in these other events if we’re going to win the meet. ’’ Mortimore is still chasing a pro visional mark (25 feet, 3 1/4 inch es) in the long jump after breaking the 25-foot mark twice earlier this season. He might triple jump as well if the team needs some more points at that point in the meet. Buciarski, who has secured a provisional mark with a mark of 18-01/2 in the pole vault, will also spread his talents around as he is scheduled to compete in the long jump, an event he finished third in at last year’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships at Husky Stadi um. One of the more interesting races of the day could be the 1,500 meters, where Oregon’s Greg James and Laird Prosser match up rather evenly with Washington’s Chris Ledford and Geoff Perry. The meet also has some historic significance as it will be the final dual meet for Dellinger, who is re tiring at the end of the season. Women: Henes will have rematch with UW’s Griffis ■ Continued from Page 11 qualifying marks and times for the Pac-10 and NCAA meets, Heinonen said the team’s goal against Washington is clear. “At this point we’re going for the win,” Heinonen said. “If the marks come, that’s great. In some events they go hand in hand.” Also of note in the meet is the final dual-meet appear ances for a grou p of seniors that includes sprinter Nicole Com missiong, heptathlete Jennifer Thomas, javelin thrower Katie Pearmine and thrower Chris Cvitanich. “This is one of our best groups of seniors,” said Hein onen, who has coached 22 such groups at Oregon. “These peo ple have carried us a long way, and we’re going to miss them.” Commissiong will be one of a handful of Oregon women competing in multiple events in an attempt to get as many points as possible against the Huskies. She will run both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter re lays, as well as the 200- and 400-meter sprints. Joining Commissiong in Jx)th relays will be Tish Henes, who will also return to competition in the 400-meter hurdles after a one-week layoff during which she won the 200-meter dash at the Oregon Invitational. “We probably would score more points if she ran the 400 and the 200," Heinonen said. As it is, the 400-meter hur dles will feature a rematch be tween Henes and Washing ton's Keisha Griffis from the Pepsi Invitational at Hayward Field earlier this season. Griff is, who is ranked seventh na tionally in the event, won the hurdles at the Pepsi meet with Henes finishing second. Both runners recorded season-best times in that race. On the field, Oregon’s throw ers face a hefty challenge in for mer Olympian Aretha Hil 1, who competes in the discus and shotput. Hill, a three-time All American, holds the Pac-10 record in the discus with a mark of 215-3 and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA in the shot with a throw of 51-5. On the line for Katie Pearmine in the javelin is a chance to qualify for her third straight NCAA Championship. Pearmine has a season best this year of 157-7 but will need to approach her personal record of 164-0 to garner considera tion for the NCAAs. Sports Briefs Two tennis players get AII-Pac-10 honors A pair of Oregon tennis play ers have received All-Pacific-10 Conference honors for their ef forts this season. The men’s Erwan Kergroach and the women's Alina Wygonowska were selected to the all-conference second team. Kergroach, a junior from France, compiled a 20-9 record this season on the way to eam inga No. 52 ranking. Wygonowska, ranked No. 50 in the nation, went 18-17 this season, including impressive victories over first-team selec tions Amanda Augustus of Cal ifornia, Reka Cseresnyes of Ari zona State and Pac-10 player of the year Annica Cooper of UCLA. Men to compete in West Regional The Oregon men’s golf team has been selected to compete in the NCAA West Regional Golf Championship, the NCAA Di vision I-A men’s golf commit tee announced this week. It is tile second straight year the Ducks have qualified for the regionals, which begin May 14 in Tempe, Ariz. Oregon is the eighth seed in the Far West District.
