It’s a big event for the peo ple back in Des Moines, and I like it better than the Penn Re lays because it’s a little bit more homespun and I think the ath letes are treated better than at Penn. At Penn it’s always crowd ed.” One of the expected highlights for the Ducks will be the return of Matthew Davis, who will com pete in the 5,000 meters in his first race since 1996. Davis, who earned all-American honors in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships in 1996, missed all of last season because of in juries. “I just want him to run a race,” Dellinger said. “I don’t care how he finishes as long as he feels good about his race. That’s the primary objective. He’s a very tal ented young man, and this will answer some questions for him and for me, too." Fifteen Oregon athletes are scheduled to compete in Des Moines, and the Ducks will be competing in three different re lays — the 4x1,600-meter relay, the distance medley and the 4x400-meter relay. The 4x1,600 relay is one of the meet’s featured events, which Oregon won two years ago. “We’d like to go back there and win the thing,” said Micah Davis, who is likely to lead off for the Ducks in that event. “We'd like to secure the title for Oregon again.” While the relays steal the head lines at Drake, there are expected to be some exciting matchups in several other events as well. One interesting matchup should come in the pole vault, where Oregon’s Piotr Buciarski will get a rematch against Min nesota’s Vesa Rantanen and Ari zona’s Dominic Johnson. Buciars ki, who cleared a personal outdoor best of 18 feet 0 1/2 inch last weekend, finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, behind both Rantanen and Johnson, although all three cleared 18- 0 1/2. Gregg Bleakney, who jumped a season best of 53-0 1/2 in the Pep si meet, will be going after his fourth straight victory in the triple jump. Damian Olson will look to snap out of a two-week slump in the high jump when he goes up against an all-star field. Another Duck expected to make some noise is Jody Morti more, who will be going after an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump after clear ing 25 feet twice this season. Davis and McGregor met in high school at the National Junior Elite Camp, at which Heinonen was a coach, and the two runners have maintained a friendship electronically over the last three years. “We’re really good friends and we exchange e-mail a couple times a week,” Davis said. “I went to South Africa my fresh man year for the World Cross Country Championships and she was my teammate.” Davis will also compete for the individual title at 1,500 meters, as will Crabb in the Special Invi tational 800 meters. Both of those races will be run on Saturday. “This is an important step for us because at the Pac-10 meet they have to run two days in a row," Heinonen said. “They don’t get that opportunity any where else.” Oregon runners will also ap pear in the 4xl00-meter relay on Friday, which is also when Tish Henes competes in the 400-meter hurdles. On Saturday, Henes, Suther land and Commissiong will join Aisha Wallace for a sprint med ley. Commissiong and Wallace will each run 200 meters, Henes will take one lap around the track and Sutherland will close with her second 800-meter leg in two days. Off the track, those women en tered in the field events will compete for individual titles. The benefits of competing in meets like the Drake Relays are two-fold, according to Heinonen. “Runners love relays,” the coach said. “And individually, it’s a chance to meet athletes they otherwise would never see dur ing the season and meet the chal lenge of traveling.” Heinonen also has 23 women tentatively scheduled to travel to Western Oregon on Saturday for a meet that will feature lesser competition, but competition nonetheless. Two notables not making the trip to Iowa are throwers Heidi Fisk and Valerie Sweitzer.
