I LETTERS TO THE EDtTOfi Editorial disappoints For the first time all year, I am disappointed with the Emerald editorial page. All year long they have supported progres sive issues and student rights. Then, when the time comes to make sure that a student gov ernment is working progressive issues and student rights in the future, they drop the ball. The important things about a successful student government are a willingness to work for students, an ability to run stu dent-focused campaigns and a mindset of students first and everything else second. By en dorsing candidates that merely want to be bureaucrats, the Emerald has endorsed a step backwards in the movement of student government. There must be a commitment to work on issues for a student government to protect student concerns. By committing to nothing, a student government pledges to do nothing. Don’t curse the student body by hav ing a lame duck ASUO. Instead, vote for a group of people that actually cares enough and knows enough about students to choose issues that students care about. Avoid the overwhelming slate of con servative tickets on the Execu tive ballot this year and vote for a Progressive duo that will do everything in their power to fight the good fight for students here on campus and statewide. Geneva Wortman and Mor gan Cowling are the only two people that have the experi ence, the drive and the willing ness to work on UO issues and to fight students. Other tickets might have good ideas, but Geneva and Morgan have the skills and the ingenuity to get good ideas done. Vote for student rights — vote Geneva and Morgan for ASUO Executive. Lisa Ryan Environmental Studies Vote for change I can understand why the Emerald wants to endorse the candidates it did. I mean, what they’re looking for is what ex ists this year: two white boys who are on the ASUO Student Senate, who actually hold the exact same positions on the ASUO Student Senate. (Bill Miner was programs finance senator No. 2 and Ben Unger was academic senator seat No. 13 and the Senate ombudsman.) The only problem is that the two white boys who want the job this year are conservative, self-serving and spineless; at least Bill and Ben are progres sive. For the second year in a row, the Emerald has endorsed a conservative ticket of white men who want to kill the ac tivism in student government in favor of suck-up bureaucracy that serves no one but a self centered administration. A stu dent government that does not actively support the student body is nothing but a waste of time. The reason that the en dorsed candidates do not have any issues is because any issue they would feel comfortable running on is far too conserva tive for Eugene and for the stu dent body. We’re not talking progressive issues; we’re talking Commentator issues. It made me laugh when the Emerald claimed that we were light years ahead of student gov ernment candidates that ran on beer fountains because the Emerald endorsed candidates who felt that their best qualifi cation was that their names rhymed with a beer and keg. Oh, that’s clever. I urge everyone to vote for candidates with progressive is sues. Fortunately, this election only gives students a progres sive option — Geneva Wortman and Morgan Cowling. Geneva and Morgan are the only candi dates who run on issues to pro tect students and student rights. If the Emerald would have come to the debates, maybe they would have realized all this. Vote smart. Vote Progressive. Vote Geneva and Morgan for ASUO Executive and prove the Emerald wrong two years in a row.
