"The whole day was pretty darn frus trating. We just could never capi talize on our opportunities.” Of which there were few. Oregon State got on the board in the first inning of Game 1 when designated hitter Courtney Stew ert lined a one-out single to left field that brought home two runs. The Beavers added two in the fourth on a Beyster home run and a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Stewert home from third. Oregon countered with a nin in the sixth when pitcher Jennie Cook lined a Beyster pitch over the wall in left field. Cook helped her cause with a two-for-two per formance at the plate in Game 1. But the Beavers added two more COOK runs in the bot tom of the in ning and cruised to the easy 4-1 victory. “We really struggled at the plate.” Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. “We failed to make adjustments on [Beyster’s] riseball, and didn’t make good decisions. “But I give Beyster the credit. She was the key for them, and has been all season. She threw strikes and really helped herself at the plate.” Mackey agreed. “Beyster had her stuff,” she said. “But I didn’t think she was overpowering.” Not overpowering, just consis tent. In Game 2, Beyster struck out six Oregon batters and allowed just five hits and one run through seven innings of work. But the final blow came in the sixth when Beyster broke open a 2-1 ballgame with a two-run home run to deep center field. The home run was the sopho more’s eighth of the season, which ranks third in the Pac-10. Beyster finished the day four for-five from the plate with two home runs, three runs batted in and two victories which moved Oregon State (22-13, 5-5) ahead of the No. 17 Ducks into a tie for fourth in the Pac-10. The two losses dropped Oregon to 32-17 overall and 4-6 in the conference — five games behind Pac-10 leader Arizona. Men: Kergroach losses to USC’s Bastl ■ Continued from Page 11A player in the Rolex Collegiate Tennis Rankings, 6-4, 7-6. “Erwin is playing at [a high] level pretty consis tently,” Russell said. “He’s continuing to get us lot of recognition, and we need that.” In other singles action on Saturday, No. 12 Allegre easily handled Carter 6-1, 6-0, No. 34 Breen beat Navarro, 6-2,6-1, No. 84 Cook knocked off Van Haver, 6-1, 6-2 and Kramer overwhelmed Becker, 6-2,6-2. The only other drama for Oregon came at No. 4 sin gles, where Hamdan provided his second stirring match of the day, dropping the first set to Decret 6-1 before taking the second 7-5. The fatigue of the lengthy doubles match caught up to Hamdan in the third set, however, and Decret took the set and the match, 6-0. “Overall, the level of competitiveness, even though the scores in some of the matches weren’t that close, was better,” Russell said. The head coach did say the Ducks’ effort Saturday was an improvement over the team’s performance against the No. 9 Trojans. USC swept the Ducks on Friday at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club, with only one Oregon athlete taking a match to three sets. Carter dropped the first set to USC’s Roman Kukal 6-4 before rallying to take the second 6-1. Kukal re covered to ensure the Trojan sweep, 8-6. In other singles results, Kergroach lost to No. 33 George Bastl, 6-4, 6-2, Navarro fell to Patrick Gottesleben, 6-1, 6-3, Hamdan was vanquished by Kyle Spencer, 6-3, 7-5, Miguel Arriaga was downed by Fernando Samayoa, 6-4,6-4, and Van Haver lost a heartbreaker to Christoph Poehler, 7-6, 7-5. The No. 33 doubles pair of Bastl and Gottesleben beat Kergroach and Carter, 8-3, Kukal and Samayoa combined to conquer Hamdan and Navarro, 8-4, and Spencer paired with Akram Zaman to take Arriaga and Becker, 8-4. Up next for Oregon is its final home match of the season Saturday against Washington.
