UO: Stanford’s Crouch allows only four hits m Continued from Page 11 that contributed to two Stanford runs in Game 2. Oregon’s five to tal errors dropped it’s confer ence-worst .938 fielding percent age even further off the Pac-10 pace. Good thing for the Ducks that they possess an explosive line-up and have one of the conference’s best big-game pitchers to fall back on. A day after holding California to just two runs on eight hits, pitcher Jennie Cook held Stanford off the board until the top of the fifth inning, when second base man Jennie Foyle scored on a one out ground ball to the short slop. In earning her team-high 17th victory this season, Cook struck out three Cardinal batters and pitched flawlessly in the second and fifth innings following two Stanford mini-rallies. “Cook threw the ball very, very well,” Gamez said. "She is a gamer. We need her out there. There is no question that she is going to pitch every first ball game.” But Cook can’t pitch every game, and Oregon has yet to have a pitcher step up into that crucial No. 2 role. Oregon’s Bethany Smith al lowed four hits and two runs in four innings of work in Game 2. The freshman pitcher is still 10-4 on the season but has lost three of her last four starts in the Pac-10. Stanford broke through in the third inning after catcher Kellie Wiginton doubled to right and Foyle doubled off the wall in center. Foyle went to third on a wild pitch, then came home after Tia Dumas hobbled the ball in left field. The Cardinal added runs in the fifth and seventh innings to stretch their lead to 4-0, more than enough for pitcher Marcy Crouch, who was having her way with the Ducks’ powerful line up. Crouch allowed just four hits and held the Ducks scoreless for just the fourth time all season. She was so effective that Oregon failed to hit a ball out of the in field in four of her seven innings of work. “[Crouch] did a very good job of mixing up her speeds,” Gamez said. “We had a tough time ad justing to the change of pace in the second game.” Oregon’s players put the blame on themselves.. “We just didn’t come out aggres sive and ready to hit in the second game,” shortstop Jill Robinson said. “We might have been a little timid ... I’m not really sure why we didn’t hit the ball.” The result was that for the sec ond straight homestand, the Ducks proved that they can play with any team in the conference — which means they can likely play with any team in the country. However, Oregon continues to make small, but critical mistakes to lose games, Gamez said. “We need to come out next week ready to go,” he said. “We need more wins if we want to se cure a postseason berth. We need to continue to swing the bat ag gressively, execute in the field and make the routine plays.” Sports Briefs Men’s golf team begins play today The Oregon men’s golf team begins competition today in the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
