Cold weather, finals

AMES, Iowa — It’s amazing
how much a difference a few
hours and a couple of time zone
changes makes.
The Oregon women left Eugene
on Wednesday afternoon on per
haps the most beautiful day of the
year. A few hours later they
stepped off the plane in Des
Moines to bone-chilling, below
zero temperatures.
Other than Saturday’s game
against Rutgers, the weather is one of
the top topics of conversations
among the Oregon contingent as the
people of Iowa are still feeling the ef
fects of a late winter storm that
dumped a foot of snow here Sunday.
The Ducks said they have dealt
with the cold quite simply by
avoiding it.
“We’ve basically just been run
ning between the bus and the ho
tel or whatever, so it’s not that
bad,” junior Sonja Curtis said. “It
wasn’t as cold as I thought it was
going to be. It’s chilly, it’s not quite
like home but that’s all right. ”
The players did spend a little time
braving the elements with a snow
ball fight on the way back to the bus
after eating lunch on Thursday.
“We got a little taste of the
snow,” Curtis said.
For her, it was literal.
“I jumped on Sonja and put snow
in her face, then she jumped on me
and put snow on me. It was fun,”
said point guard Natalie Hughes.
No early vacation
The Oregon women might not
be attending classes these last few
days of dead week, but that does
n’t mean they’ve taken an early
spring break.
Thursday was rather uneventful
for the Ducks as many of the play
ers spent much ot the day study
ing for finals or doing homework.
“This week’s been really busy
just trying to get ready to leave, just
people taking tests early, people
getting all their papers done and
stuff,” senior Kirsten McKnight
said. “So just being really busy we
didn’t get a lot of sleep this week.
It’s good to have a day to catch up
on things and get some sleep.”
Most of the players said they
crammed early in the week.
“I turned in all my work before I
left so I wouldn’t have to worry
about a whole lot when I was on
the road,” said freshman Angelina
Wolvert. “At the last minute I had
to write two papers and write a
couple of proposals.”

As the only four-year senior on
the Oregon roster, McKnight is
making her fourth straight tourna
ment appearance.
Being a seasoned veteran of the
tournament, McKnight is taking
advantage of the opportunity to
pass on her postseason knowledge
to Oregon’s younger players
“It’s a great chance, especially
for all these freshmen, to start off
their college careers with a trip to
the tournament and see what it’s
like,” she said. “Hopefully they’ll
realize how special it is to be here,
and that it’s not just a given. ”
Of her four tournament appear
ances, McKnight said this one is the
most special, or most rewarding.
“I would definitely say this one
is the most rewarding for me just
because after the two injuries [to
Jenny Mowe and Brianne Mehar
ry] no one expected us to make it
here, and we just refused to lose
and give up,” she said. “We had a
vision to get here and we did, so it
feels awesome.”
