Ducks: Madden’s off night hurts UO Si Continued from Page 11 points. Ryan Mendez also hit all three of his three-pointers on his way to a 13-point effort, while point guard Arthur Lee added 16 points and four assists. Mark Mad sen did the damage for Stanford in the post and scored eight of his 12 points in the first half. Oregon’s Terik Brown tied his season-high point total for road games with 19 on seven-of-12 shooting and added five assists. A.D. Smith chipped in 15 in a rare starting appearance, and senior Ja mar Curry added 14 for the Ducks. One Oregon player who didn’t contribute his normal effort was Henry Madden, who had just one rebound and only three points. Madden was one of seven from the field. “He did not play very well at all,” Kent said. “He had a hard time un derstanding that because he didn’t see it, but we certainly did. What I’m hoping is, with Henry and others, they haven’t turned it off, because we’re coming down the stretch.” Oregon closes its regular season Saturday night against California at the Oakland (Calif.) Coliseum. The game Thursday got out of hand early. Smith led the Ducks with 13 points on three-of-three shooting from behind the arc in the first half, but Stanford hit 74 percent from the field and 80 percent from three-point range to put the game out of reach at the intermission. “I though we were making a run at it early on, but we didn’t play real smart in an eight or nine minute stretch of the first half, and they just stepped it up and put us away,” Kent said. The Cardinal took an early 21 16 lead after scoring on 10 of its first 11 possessions, including nine points by Lee and eight by Madsen. Oregon had tied the game at 14-14 after Henry Madden hit a three-pointer on an assist by Flo Hartenstein, when the Cardinal went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead. A Jamar Curry layin kept the deficit at five points at 27-22 be fore Stanford capitalized on three Oregon misses to score the next 10 points. A.D. Smith and Terik Brown hit back-to-back threes to bring the Ducks within nine, but the Cardinal closed the half with an 11-3 run to take a 48-31 half time lead. Included in that run were two consecutive intentional fouls by the Ducks, including one on a hand check by Curry that motivat ed Kent to have a discussion with the lead official. Afterthat huddle, the referees called four consecu tive fouls on Stanford to close the half. Tennis: Kaneshiro, Martin move up ■ Continued from Page 11 coach Jack Griffin said. "We’ve been working hard,” Griffin said. “We’ve been doing the right things and trying to get in good condition, and sometimes things just don’t go your way. That’s part of dealing with life. ” Team captain Allison Sosnowand freshman Sarah Colistro are the two Oregon players who will be un available. Sosnow has a stress fracture in her left foot that is expected to keep her on the sidelines for up to a month, and Colistro has not played in a match since the middle of January because of a hamstring injury. The only plus for the Ducks (3-5) is that this dual match with Washington (8-2) does not count in the Pacific-10 Conference standings. Oregon and Wash ington meet again in Seattle on April 5 in a Pac-10 match. Oregon has had two weeks off since its win at Pacif ic on Feb. 22, but Griffin said most of that time has been used to rest his players in the hopes of getting them healthy. Griffin said Jaime Martin and Alina Wygonowska have also been nursing nagging in juries. No. 61 Washington has a seven-match winning streak and is coming off a shutout of Colorado State last weekend. The shutout was the Huskies’ fifth of the season. The Ducks are looking for their first win of the sea son against a ranked opponent and their first-ever win over the Huskies. All five Oregon losses this season are to ranked teams, including a 5-0, rain-shoriened loss to Fresno State during its last weekend of compe tition on Feb. 21. Shanelle Kaneshiro and Martin will each play two spots higher than usual for the Ducks because of the team’s injuries. Kaneshiro (7-10) will play No. 3 sin gles and Martin (3-12) will play No. 4. Walk-on fresh man Anne Endrikat (0-7) is scheduled to play No. 5 singles for Oregon. "I think it’s going to be good for us because some players that have normally played lower on the team are having to step up,” Griffin said. “When we do get people healthy, those players are going to be at a high erlevel.” Men's tennis Riding the momentum of winning five of its last six matches, the Oregon men’s tennis team looks to improve its 9-2 nonconference record this weekend in California. The Ducks (9-4 overall) play noon dual matches at Cal Poly SLO (4-3) on Saturday and UC Santa Bar bara (4-6) on Sunday. Oregon is coming off a 6-1 victory over No. 46 New Mexico in Eugene on Monday that head coach Chris Russell said was the biggest win in his three-season tenure with the team. The marquee matchup Saturday pits No. 92 Erwan Kergroach (14-5) against No. 61 Chris Magyary of Cal Poly SLO. Oregon’s No. 3, Carlos Navarro, defeated Magyary in Eugene last season.
