Arizona State ■ 1997 SEASON: 14-6 ■ Conference: 4-0 ■ Outlook: Considered the front-runner, the defending Pac-10 champion has six wrestlers who occupy the No, 1 seed entering into the tourna ment. The Sun Devils have fin ished in the top 10 nationally in 11 of the previous 13 seasons. Bosie State ■ 1997 SEASON: 6-5-2 ■ Conference: 3-4-1 ■ Outlook: A young team that should have their best years in front of them. The Broncos recorded one of their biggest upsets of the season when they tied Oregon on Jan. 31. Best bets are with Kirk White at 158 pounds and sophomore Larry Quisel at 150 pounds. Cal-St. Fullerton ■ 1997 SEASON. 3-9 ■ Conference 1-4 ■ Outlook: This team will be hard pressed to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish at the Pac-10 Champions. It has three wrestlers ranked in the top four of their respective weight class, but its best bet is with 126-pound Joey Coughran. Cal-St. Bakersfield ■ 1997 SEASON: 8-3 ■ Conference: 4-3 ■ Outlook: Has the nation’s No.1 ranked heavyweight in Stephen Neal. The junior re turns to defend his NCAA and Pac-10 titles from last season. Cai-St. Bakersfield’s next best bets are 188-pound Moses De flin and 134-pound Mike Men doza Cal PolySLO ■ 1997 SEASON: 10-8 ■ Conference: 4-3 ■ Outlook: The Mustangs fin ished tied for third at the Pac-10 Championships last season. Don't look for similar results this weekend. Cal Poly SLO is lead by the conference’s No. 1 ranked wrestler at 190 pounds, Michael French. Oregon ■ 1997 SEASON: 9-3-1 ■ Conference: 5-2-1 ■ Outlook: One of the confer ence front-runners and expect ed to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish. Senior Jere my Ensrud should be a lock at 134 pounds, but the middle and upper weights will be crucial to their finish. The Ducks could have as many as nine wrestlers seeded in the tournament. Oregon State ■ 1997 SEASON: 9-9 ■ Conference: 4-4 ■ Outlook: Considered a con ference heavyweight at the start of the season, the Beavers have had injury problems in the last couple months of the season and enter the tournament on a five-match losing streak. Best bets are at 126 pounds, 142 pounds and heavyweight. Stanford ■ 1997 SEASON: 2-10 ■ Conference: 1-5 ■ Outlook: The Cardinal strug gled throughout the 1997-98 season. They have only one wrestler ranked in the top four of any conference weight class, 142-pound Beau Weiner. Wein er hopes for a repeat of last sea son, when he finished second overall in his weight class and advanced to the NCAAs. UC Davis ■ 1997 SEASON: 7-8 ■ Conference: 2-5 ■ Outlook: A much improved team over last season. The Ag gies finished last at the Pac-1 Os last season, but they should fin ish near the middle of the pack this time around. UC Davis’ best bet is at heavyweight with Jarold Jesso. Mike Collier could make a run at 134 pounds. Pac-10s: Middle weights kev for UO ■ Continued from Page 11 Sun Devil Michael Kawamura took over the No. 1 spot at 118 pounds after posting his 20th victory of the season against Cal State Bak ersfield’s Moses Deflin on Feb. 14. Oregon’s John Taylor is cur rently ranked No. 2 in the Pac-10 at 118 pounds, but an injured back may keep the former NCAA Championships qualifier out of competition. Taylor’s injury plagued senior season may have already come to an end, head coach Ron Finley said. The top three finishers in each weight class earn automatic berths to the NCAAs, and coach es will select the remaining 13 at large bids to complete the confer ence selections. Another Sun Devil occupies the top spot at 126 pounds. Senior Shawn Ford has been used sparing ly this season, only amassing a 7-3 overall record, but is expected to re ceive the weight’s No. 1 seed today. Oregon State’s Jason Buce, who has a 23-4 overall record this season, should also get consideration. Oregon’s Jeremy Ensrud is a lock for the No. 1 seed at 134 pounds. The defending Pac-10 champion leads the Ducks with 27 wins and has held the confer ence’s top spot at 134 pounds since the preseason. Like Ensrud, Oregon State’s Os car Wood is a lock for the No. 1 seed at 142 pounds. The Beavers’ co-captain is 22-5 this season and ranks second on the team with six pins. Stanford’s Beau Weiner, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships last season, will likely get the No. 2 seed. Oregon’s Dusty Roberts en tered the top four last week for the first time in his career. “The key for this team is to place higher than their seeds," Finley said. “This team has been able to fire itself up for every big match this season, and I don’t see any reason why they won’t do it again this weekend.” If the Ducks are going to im prove on their fourth-place finish from last season, they will need their inexperienced group of mid dle-weights to have the same suc cess that the experienced group had last season. The problem is that only Sean Morgan returns from the three Oregon middle-weights who qualified for the NCAA Champi onships. The junior finished sec ond at 158 pounds after dropping the final match to Arizona State’s Matt Suter. The problem for Morgan is that Suter is back to defend his Pac-10 title and again ranks No. 1 at 158 pounds. Suter is third on the Sun Devils’ win list this season with 23 victories. Despite a 26-10 record this season, Morgan has dropped to fourth. Arizona State secured the con ference title last season with vic tories at 158, 167, 177 and 190 pounds. All four of those wrestlers return this season and occupy the top spot in the confer ence rankings. Oregon’s Kevin Keeney and Doug Lee are likely to get the No. 2 seeds at 167 and 177 pounds, re spectively. Both wrestlers will be making their first appearance at the Pac-10 Championships. Cal Poly SLO’s Michael French will probably be the No. 1 seed at 190 pounds, although Oregon State’s Shane Zajac and Oregon’s Chael Sonnen have both made late-season surges for the top spot. Zajac ranks fourth on the Beavers’ win list with 19 victories, and Sonrten’s 12 pins this season rank fifth all-time for the Ducks. “I think I can win it outright.” Sonnen said. “My main goal obvi ously is to advance to the NCAAs, but I really think 1 can win it. Con fidence will be the key.” The heavyweight division will feature the nation's No. 1 ranked wrestler in Cal State Bakersfield’s Stephen Neal. The defending NCAA and conference champion will return as the No. 1 seed in his final Pac-10 meet. Sports Brim s Oregon track team heads to Reno again The Oregon men’s and women’s track and field teams return to indoor action this weekend at the Mountain Pacif ic Championships in Reno, Nev. The meet, which starts today and concludes Saturday, in cludes primarily athletes from the Big West and Pacific-10 Con ference. On the men’s side, 22 Oregon athletes have qualified for the two-day event, including a few who will be putting in some double time. Seven Ducks are scheduled to compete in at least two different events. On the women’s side, 18 ath letes are scheduled to compete, including former All-American Nicole Commissiong as she con tinues to make a comeback from a knee injury. Buciarski travels to world championships Junior pole vaulter Piotr Bu ciarski will skip the meet in Reno and travel a bit further this weekend to take part in the World Indoor Championships in Spain. Buciarski is expected to compete either today or Sat urday and said he thinks he needs a mark of 18 feet, four inches to qualify for the finals. 002583.
