Oregon daily emerald now on the world wide web Quintet highlights jazz event The School of Music will present a day of jazz performances, workshops By Shannon Sneed entertainment Reporter If you’re a lover of good jazz, the University School of Music will look and sound a lot like paradise this Saturday. The 10th annual Oregon Jazz Celebration, an all-day event at the music building, will feature workshops, clinics and perfor mances from a variety of high school jazz ensembles from around the Northwest, and an evening jazz concert with the Portland-based Gary Hobbs Quintet and the Oregon Jazz En semble. The annual event is primarily designed as a day of learning for high school students, said Scott Barkhurst, publicity director for the School of Music. It provides an opportunity for students to attend clinics during the day and learn more about the specifics of jazz performance and their instruments, he said. “The Oregon Jazz Celebration is, at its core, an educational event,” Barkhurst said. "These students are coming from all over the Northwest for instruc tion and evaluation.” The Gary Hobbs Quintet will conclude the day’s activities with an evening performance with the award-winning Oregon Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. “The whole program will be a combination of the quintet and the ensemble, and it should be great to watch," Barkhurst said. Hobbs, a well known jazz drummer, has traveled to col leges and universities around the country teaching jazz clinics and workshops. He has also recorded on a variety of albums and performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, appearing on stage, radio and television. Hobbs has performed with a number of big-time jazz artists, including Eddie Harris, Bud Shank, Tom Grant and Anita O’Day. He has now based in Portland, where he performs as the leader of one band and a sideman in another. The Oregon Jazz Ensemble will also perform with the quin tet. They have won wide ac claim throughout the Northwest as a premier jazz ensemble, and they have performed frequently at a number of jazz festivals and Gary Hobbs Quintet The quintet is performing as part of the Oregon Jazz Celebration. ■ WHAT: Jazz drummer Gary Hobbs and his quintet will per form with the Oregon Jazz En semble. ■ WHBI: Saturday, Jan. 17 aWHBIE: Beall Concert Hall, 961 E.18thAve. ■ TICKETS: Available at the door, $8 general admission and $5 for senior citizens competitions throughout the re gion. Tickets to see The Gary Hobbs Quintet and the Oregon Jazz En semble perform are $8, but all day celebration passes, which include access to the jazz clinics and workshops as well as the evening concert, are $5.
