Vigil: Group calls for global support ■ Continued from Page 1 1994 when the rebels declared war on the Mexican state, calling for education, welfare and indige nous land rights. According to Alyssa Abbey, a 22-year-old international studies major and C1SCAP member, the vigil sent a message to the Univer sity community. “The biggest achievement is in creasing the awareness and get ting [the community] involved,” she said. Abbey recently visited Chiapas and got a first-hand perspective of the problems that plague the high ly indigenous and mountainous Mexican state. She believes there is a definite link between poverty and problems such as the mas sacre in Chiapas. According to John Groves, a graduate student in journalism and a CISCAP volunteer, interna tional support and demands play an important role in ending the wars in Mexico. "The Zapatistas can’t win with arms,” he said. “They can only win with international support.” But Miksch believes interna tional support will only go so far toward ending the problems in Mexico. "[Demilitarization] has to be a starting point,” he said, “but its ultimately up to the people of Chiapas.” Paying for Programs The ASUO Programs Finance Committee committed $117,127 of student incidental fees Monday night. This was the first PFC meeting of the season; the 1998-99 budget for every ASUO program will be set by the time the committee fin ishes its hearings. None of Monday’s hearings were particularly controversial, PFC member Dan Reid said: “It was about as easy as we expected. None of the early ones are very difficult.” The committee reconvenes Thursday. % CHANGE (CHANGE ORGANIZATION1998-991997-98FROM LAST YEARFROM LAST YEAR Committee for Musical Arts $4,655$4,655 0%$0 ASUO Legal Services $107,998 $104,965 + 2.89% +$3,033 YWCA__ $4,474$3,758 +19.05%+$716 TOTAL $117,127 $113,378 + 7.3% +$3,749 CARA STRAZZO/Emerald You can read the Emerald from anywhere in the world.
