Elway leads Broncos to Super Bowl Denver squeaks by the Steelers 24-21 in the AFC championship By Alan Robinson The Associated Press PITTSBURGH — John Elway didn’t need a fourth-quarter come back to get back to the Super Bowl this time. The Denver Broncos took a 10 point lead on Elway’s two touch down passes in the final two min utes of the first half, then held off turnover-stricken Pittsburgh for a 24-21 victory Sunday in the AFC championship game. Elway also led a tense drive in the final minutes to keep the ball away from the Steelers, who pulled within a field goal on Kordell Stew art’s touchdown pass with 2:46 left, the only points in the second half. One season after they couldn’t get to the Super Bowl with home field advantage, the Broncos found the road there leads away from Mile High Stadium. The vic tory gives the 37-year-old Elway a fourth chance to win a ring after an eight-year wait. The Broncos are winless in four Super Bow Is, including their first in 1978, six years before Elway arrived. The last two AFC championship games in Pittsburgh went down to the final play, just as Elway’s first two victories in the AFC title game in the 1986 and 1987 seasons did. Nobody is better at game-winning rallies than the certain Hall of Famer, who has led 42 such come backs in the fourth quarter. But this time, Elway managed the clock and his offense to perfec tion late in the second quarter, masterfully driving the Broncos to two touchdowns in a span of 1:34 to put Denver up 24-14 at halftime. Both touchdown passes came af ter pass interference penalties, which totaled 56 yards. Still, Stewart nearly did it again. He shook off three interceptions, all of them critical, to hit Charles Johnson on a 14-yard TD pass with 2:46 to play. The score seemed to electrify the Steelers and their bench, and they held Denver to three yards on the its next two plays. But Elway found tight end Shannon Sharpe over the middle for 18 yards and the first down, and, with only 1:52 left, Denver had its fifth AFC championship. Packers claim second straiaht NFC title The Green Bay defense held the 49ers to just 32 rushing yards on 17 carries By Dave Goldberg The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — Brett Favre and the Green Bay defense made the big plays. The San Fran cisco 49ers made the big mistakes. The result was a 23-10 Packers victory Sunday in the NFC cham pionship game that sends them to San Diego, where they will play for their second straight Super Bowl victory, this time against the Denver Broncos. Favre threw for 222 yards, in cluding a 27-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman. The NFL’s MVP quarterback took ad vantage of San Francisco corner backs Rod Woodson and Marquez Pope, the one weakness in the 49ers’ league-leading defense. Instead, it was the Green Bay defense, playing in rain that grew steadier as the game wore on, that looked like the league’s best. With the Favre-led offense, the Packers look invincible in a game the NFC team has won 13 straight times. The early line on the Super Bowl on Jan. 25 has the Packers as 12 1/2-point favorites. The Green Bay defense allowed only three points — the other sev en came on Chuck Levy's 95-yard kickoff return with 2:52 left after Dorsey Levens, who ran for 107 yards, made it 23-3 with a five yard touchdown run. The Packers played team defense as preached by coordinator Fritz Shurmur, but there were individual standouts. Eugene Robinson returned an interception 51 yards to set up the game’s first touchdown. Gilbert Brown, Brian Williams and LeRoy Butler shut down the San Francisco running game, limiting it to 32 yards on 17 carries. We cultivate champions.
