Bruins next test for the Ducks By Ryan Frank Sports Editor Step No. 1 of the equation was solved Thursday night. Step No. 2 comes to town for Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest in the form of the UCLA Bruins. Fresh off overcoming a 15-point halftime deficit to win at Oregon State Thursday, the Bruins come into town boasting the confer ence’s second-leading scoring of fense (before Thursday’s games) and one of the Pacific-10 Confer ence’s top young players in May lana Martin, the 1996-97 confer ence freshman of the year. UCLA (7-5 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) has now won five of its last six, losing to Arizona at home last weekend. Martin, who led the Bruins’ charge in the second half Thurs day with 10 points, is in the con ference’s top 10 in scoring (third), rebounding (fourth), blocks (sev enth), steals (10th) and free-throw percentage (second). Erica Gomez, the 1995-96 Pac 10 freshman of the year, returns to the Bruins after a season-ending knee injury last year. The 5-foot-9 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL sophomore guard is second in the confer ence in assists. The Ducks are coming off a 14 point win over USC on Thurs day. a game in which they re gained the confidence they so desperately needed. “I think this really gives us a confidence boost, knowing as much adversity we’re going through that we can still win bas ketball games,” Runge said after the USC win. “And obviously it gives them confidence going into the UCLA game." Last season, the Ducks swept the Bruins, but the game in Eu gene was just a three-point con test. In the series, Oregon holds a 13-12 advantage after winning eight of the past nine contests be tween the teams. The Bruins have not won at McArthur Court since the 1991-92 season. The Ducks could once again be shorthanded, as they played with out starting guard Lisa Bowyer Thursday against the Trojans. Bowyer is nursing a sprained left ankle and is listed as questionable for the contest with the Bruins. If the win against the Trojans was any indication, Oregon should continue to go to its posts for much of the scoring load. The combination of Brianne Meharry, Angelina Wolvert and Sonja Curtis scored 47 points on a combined 19 for 26 from the field. It was a performance expect ed from a four-year starter, not a true freshmen, although the way she has played in the first 11 games of her Oregon career, it could be the type of perfor mance Oregon faithful will soon come to expect more of. The line almost speaks for it self: 24 points, 14 rebounds (seven offensive) on 9-for-13 shooting from the field as Ore gon beat Southern California 79-65. And just for good mea sure, she threw in a pair of as sists and a blocked shot. Along with the noisy throng of Oregon fans, who gave Meharry a resounding ovation when she finally left the game for the first time with three minutes, 38 seconds remain ing, Oregon head coach Jody Runge was impressed, “I don’t think that I've ever seen a freshman in this pro gram play like that,” Runge said. “She was just gonna get it done. There was just no doubt in her mind that it was gonna happen. She was dead-dog tired out there in the second half, and she just kept going." Meharry ended up playing 38 minutes, second only to USC guard Kristin Clark, who logged 39 minutes on the night. Meharry was especially spectacular in one crucial stretch early in the second half. Taking advantage of the fronting style of play used by USC’s post defenders, Mehar ry literally single-handedly carried the Ducks, scoring eight straight Oregon points in a span of 1:31. First came a rebound basket with 17:15 remaining.
