UW ready for Arizona challenge Center Jelan i McCoy and forward Kris Johnson return to the Bruins' lineup By Rob Moseley Sports Reporter The national champion Wild cats should be 3-0 entering this matchup with the Huskies, who are one of those teams that could beat almost anybody “on any giv en night,” as coaches like to say. The guard-oriented Wildcats, led by preseason All-Americans Mike Bibby and Miles Simon, should face a stiff challenge in Seattle, where the offense runs through 7-footer Todd MaeCul loch. MacCulloch, the NCAA leader in field-goal percentage last sea son, should be familiar to Duck fans, as it was he who tapped in the winner with four seconds left to beat Oregon in Seattle last sea son. The game is on Fox Sports Northwest at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Back to full strength UCLA is back at full strength af ter tile return of forward Kris John son and center Jelani McCoy from suspension. Johnson made his first appearance of the season on Dec. 13, scoring 15 points in 15 minutes against Cal-State Fuller r ton, and McCoy returned Dec. 30 with a seven-point effort in 14 minutes against Illinois. Johnson, a senior, and McCoy, a junior, were suspended Sept. 29 for viola tion of department policies and team rules. Award favorites Arizona's guard tandem of se nior Miles Simon and sophomore Mike Bibby appears on the list of finalists for two national player of the year awards. Each is named on the list of 10 finalists for the Nai smith Award and among the 30 candidates for the Wooden Award. Respect anyone? In its annual college hoops pre view, The Sporting News ranks the Pacific-10 Conference seventh na tionally, below the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 10, the South eastern Conference, the Western Athletic Conference, the Atlantic 10 and the Big 12. The Big 10 boasts nothing beyond No. 5 Pur due, and the Big 12 is another one hit wonder with Kansas. Arizona won the national championship last season after finishing fifth in conference play and was the sec ond NCAA champ in three years from the Pac-10, as well as one of four Pac-10 teams in last season’s Sweet Sixteen. Injury talk Stanford’s sophomore forward Mark Madsen, who had started the first 11 games of the season, suf fered a stress fracture in his right foot during a practice in December. Madsen, who entered the weekend as the Cardinal’s second-leading scorer and rebounder, was origi nally expected to miss 10 to 14 days but is now expected to miss at least a month. Two-sport star Redshirt freshman Ortege Jenk ins, a 6-foot-2 guard, joined the Arizona roster recently after com pleting his duties as the starting quarterback for the Wildcat foot ball team. Jenkins began the year third on the depth chart, but in juries forced him into the starting role in the Wildcats’ fifth game of the season. The Long Beach, Calif., native threw for 1,669 yards and 19 touchdowns, the most ever for a freshman in the Pac-10. A major loss The loss of Rodrigo de la Fuente to the Spanish professional league should mean increased pressure on Washington State’s Carlos Daniel, the lone member of the Cougars’ top four scorers from last season still in Pullman. Daniel ranks third in the Pac-10 in re bounding this season, as well as 12th in scoring and seventh in blocks, de la Fuente was among the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, steals and field goal-percentage before leaving school on Sunday. \ 1-2 1-2 Team (3) or Indiv. With a perfect 10-0 record following their 73-58 win at Washington State last Satur day, the Huskies are off to their best start since going 11-1 to start the 1989-90 season. The Huskies, unranked at the beginning of the season, have shot to No. 7 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, their highest ranking since that same 1989-90 season when they finished No. 3 with a 28-3 record. Washington hasn’t exactly been beating up on patsies, ei ther, dealing No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 17 North Carolina State their only losses of the season. The Huskies beat Van derbilt (11 -1) 82-71 on Dec. 6 to avenge a loss to the Com modores in the first round of last season's NCAA Tourna ment. They took care of the Wolf Pack (12-1) 95-88 in the Seattle Times Classic on Dec. 21. Washington has been led by the dynamic duo of guard Jamie Redd and forward Am ber Hall. Redd is second in the conference in scoring at 22.1 points per game, while Hall leads the Pac-10 in rebounding with an average of 11.8. For ward/center Gena Pelz is sec ond in the conference with 9.2 rebounds per contest. Can't shoot straight? No problem Perhaps shooting a high per centage from the field really is n’t that big of a deal. At least it’s not for the Huskies. They have gotten off to their undefeated start de spite shooting a horrific 38.3 percent from the field. Suffice it to say, that ranks dead last among Pac-10 teams.
