CHAD PATTESON/Emerald Center Mike Carson stood tall in the Ducks’loss to Santa Clara on Saturday. The senior had 15points. Carson gains needed confidence in loss Oregon Center Mike Carson led Oregon with 7 5points and seven rebounds By Rob Moseley Sports Reporter If Santa Clara was the party crasher Saturday afternoon, it was Michael Carson’s party it was crashing, as Carson put to gether the best game of his Ore gon career against the Broncos despite the Ducks’ 67-58 loss. The 7-foot senior from Chi no, Calif., led Oregon with 15 points and seven rebounds, both totals bettered only by his 19-point, nine-rebound effort against Hawaii-Hilo two sea sons ago, a game in which Car son made 11 free throws. Carson earned his points the hard way Saturday, muscling his way to the basket and dis playing overwhelming confi dence in his ability to make shots and pull down rebounds. “Coach kind of threatened me and said I needed to get it going or I wouldn't be getting my minutes,” Carson said. "It was something that motivated me a little bit, and I just dropped everything and decid ed to play. I’ve been meaning to do that for awhile.” Turn to DUCK, Page 16 Hughes: Runge impressed with senior’s second-half performance ■ Continued from Page 11 four short to mid-range jump shots. She connected on four of eight shots in the second half and was four of six from the foul line, including both ends of a one-and one opportunity with 10 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the game that gave the Ducks the lead for good, 47-45. She also made the second of two free throws with five seconds remaining to give Oregon a four point lead and sealed the victory. "I told [Hughes] last night, ‘Why do I have to get all over you to get you to play hard?’” Runge said. “We did try and change her out of the primary defensive posi tion to hopefully free her up a lit tle bit more offensively as far as not burning so much energy stoD ping the ball.” What exactly was it Runge said at halftime that got Hughes and the Ducks so riled up? “Coach Runge... motivated us to play our hardest,” Hughes said in a severely understating tone. Runge was pleased with the fire Hughes demonstrated in the sec ond half. “1 was very impressed,” she said. "That’s Natalie. That's how Natalie plays. She just hasn’t been playing like that recently.” Hughes seemed less impressed by her second-half performance. “I just took the open shots, that’s all,” she said. “I was open. We all had to step up in ar eas, and 1 stepped up my offensive game and HUliHco enaeo up scoring. Jen ny [Mowe] was setting good screens for me so I could shoot it.” In addition to the 16 points, Hughes dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds while playing 36 minutes. Perhaps Hughes is just a sec ond-half player. In Friday’s first-round game against the Portland Saints, Hugh es scored nine of her 12 points on four of six shooting from the field after halftime as the Ducks held on for the 76-60 victory. Kent said Madden's second-half min utes had to do with the flow of the game and the production of Nel son, Carson and forward Flo Hartenstein. Guard Terik Brown, averaging 15 points, missed all five of his shots, including four three-point ers and ended the game with one point. Also, Jamar Curry, still strug gling to find his shooting touch, made three of eight shots for sev en points. The senior guard has made only 30 percent of his shots in the season’s first three games. Santa Clara was led by Craig Johnson’s 18 points, including four three-pointers and Jones’ 12 points, half of which came in the games final 1:49. “I don't think either team is overly impressed with how they played today,” said Santa Clara head coach Dick Davey. “I hope this isn’t the finished product. I hope we have room to grow.” Oregon led 18-9 early in the game behind the ability to get the hall inside to its big men. But as the case has been so far this sea son, the Ducks hit a cold spell on offense and defense and the Bron cos went on a 21-6 run starting at the 6:46 mark to end the first half leading 30-24. Oregon tied the score at 47 with 8:08 left in the game when Carson was fouled on a jump shot. Car son’s shot was good and he made the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Ducks went up by one on their following possession when Hartenstein converted on one of two free throws. But Johnson put the Broncos back up by five with a three pointer two possessions later and the Ducks would get no closer than three points in the final five minutes. “We had a great start to this ballgame and had them on the run,” Kent said. “Then we had a mental lapse and stopped block ing out and stopped coming through the screen, and we stopped being there when they caught the basketball and sure enough, they made us pay. “We did a very nice job of de fending them early on and then went away from some things and went to sleep a little bit. Those are correctable things that we can cer tainly go back and work on. But again, this team is learning on the job as we go along.” And even in a loss, Kent said the team progressed Saturday, es pecially with the play of Nelson, Carson, Hartenstein and Mc Shane. “Ours is a system where we need to develop players and get them confidence," Kent said. “We grew some today in that catego ry.” Need to get rid of that old computer?
