Men: Manlove takes time off for classwork ■ Continued from Page 11A Rosemond appears to have won his battle with sophomore Mike McShane at point guard and is ex pected to start Friday. “Yasir has probably played with a little more confidence,” Kent said. “But starting isn’t the most important thing to me, it's who is more productive with the minutes they get." Kent said both should see am ple playing time, especially in the next few games. BYU, which is now 0-2 includ ing a 73-59 season-opening loss at San Diego State on Nov. 15, re turns just one starter, forward Justin Weidauer. The senior led the team in rebounds last season with 8.3 per game and was second in scoring, with 8.3 points per game. Steve Cleveland is in his first year as the BYU head coach. Oregon took care of some final bureaucratic business earlier in the week by selecting Madden, Smith and Jamar Curry as team captains. Kent said that while determin ing captains was entirely up to the team, which voted for all three unanimously, he was happy with the selection of the three players he himself would have chosen, including sophomore Smith. "Leadership can come from a freshman if they’re ready to go,” Kent said. “A.D.’s a guy that has played a year and has sat and watched for a year. I think he’s very smart in terms of under standing the game, and also he’s straightforward and tells it like it is, and I think the guys respect that.” One player who will not be making the trip to Provo, Utah, is redshirt freshman Tyron Manlove, who on Monday re quested time away from basket ball to concentrate on his school work. “He's someone who is strug gling academically right now, but he’s not ineligible by any means,” Kent said. “In a couple of his classes he is not performing to the level that we feel he is capable of. I certainly expect him to come back, but when is up to him.” Kent said the decision for Manlove to sit out was precipitat ed by the player and his parents and supported by the team. He will not practice with the team during his absence. Women: Runge concerned season debut is on the road m Continued from Page 11A The game begins a grueling nonconference schedule for the Ducks. They play six of the nine games on the road, highlighted by a Dec. 5 date at No. 16 Western Kentucky. They are slated to play at Portland, last season’s West Coast Conference champion and a team that has won 23 straight home games, and will host No. 24 Kansas. “We’re really excited to get go ing for real," Oregon head coach Jody Runge said. “I’m really excit ed to see how we do with the ad versity of playing on the road and how our young kids handle the life of playing on the road for the first time. “I think that’s going to be really instrumental in what we can ac complish this season." Runge was referring to the 10 players who are either freshmen, sophomores or new to the team this season. Idaho is 0-1 this season follow ing a 73-71 loss to Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday. Alii Nieman, a first-team All Big West selection as a freshman last season and the Vandals’ top returning scorer (18.3 points per game), will not be in the lineup tonight. Nieman, a 6-foot-2 forward who paced the Vandals with 17 points on Tuesday, is the starting outside hitter on the Idaho volley ball team and will be playing with the team in the Big West Tourna ment in Long Beach, Calif., this weekend. The Vandals will be thin down low. In addition to Nieman’s ab sence, 6-foot-2 center Laura Bloom will be out with a case of mononucleosis, and 6-foot-7 Lara Chaney is sitting out the season as a medical redshirt. That leaves 6-foot-2 junior Jen nifer Stone to battle 6-foot-5 Jen ny Mowe in the post. “Offensively, it’s going to be big Jenny Mowe inside,” Hughes said. “I think we’ll be looking to her a lot because slie’s very big and can score inside. Then, when the defense knows that, she's go ing to kick it back out to us guards and we’ll shoot it.” Mowe is the only true center on the Ducks’ roster this season and is looking forward to the opportu nity to feast on the small Vandal players. “Our post play is going to try to be dominating,” she said. “I’m very excited to get going and get the season underway.” Runge is a bit concerned about die fact that her team will be away from McArthur Court for the sea son debut. “It’s always nerve-racking when you play on the road be cause you have to do things so well,” she said. “You may not shoot the ball particularly well on the road, so you better be able to defend, not foul, and execute things both offensively and defen sively. I think if we do that we’ll be fine.” Idaho was 14-14 overall last season and 8-6 in the Big West, good enough for second place in the Eastern Division. The Van dals were picked to finish second to Nevada in the 1997 Big West media poll. ODE Classifieds.
