Not to mention that it ha9 won 22 of its last 26 games and 13 of its last 14 conference games, including six straight wins at home. And believe it or not, Arizona State head coach Bruce Snyder said he is actually glad that Ore gon beat Washington because not only did it put the Sun Devils back in the Rose Bowl race, but it served as a wake-up call to his team not to overlook the Ducks. “They will come in fired up,” Snyder predicted of Oregon. “They showed that they are real ly a good football team with a lot of high-power players. But that made us focus on this game.” The game has bowl ramifica tions for both teams. For Oregon, a win would do more than just give it the necessary six wins to be bowl eligible. It would give the Ducks their second win over a ranked opponent in as many games, opening the eyes of many bowl game selection committees. For the Sun Devils, who are tied with UCLA, Washington State and Washington at 5-1 in the conference, a win is neces sary. With Washington playing both UCLA and Washington State to end the season, the Sun Devils can only sit back and let those three battle it out while r Oregon ■ 1997 SEASON: 5-4,2-4 vs. Arizona (W) 16-9 at Nevada (W) 24-20 vs. Fresno State (W) 43-40 at Stanford (l) 58-49 vs. Washington St. (L) 24-13 vs. UCLA (L) 39-31 vs. Utah (W) 31-13 at USC (L) 24-22 at Washington (W) 31-28 ■ Has won last 10 games played In the month of November ■ Has lost two straight against Arizona State ■ Last won in Tempe in 1993 ■ Has won 12 of 15 games de cided by seven points or less under head coach Mike Bellotti they take care of themselves. But a loss to Oregon would kill any hopes of a repeat Rose Bowl ap pearance. However, Arizona State has got to like its chances against Ore gon. The Sun Devils boast the Pac-lO’s No. 1 rushing offense at 175.1 yards per game. Oregon, on the other hand, has the confer ence’s worst defense, giving up 170.9 rushing yards per game and 430.3 yards overall. Tailbacks Michael Martin (66.9 yards per game) and J.R. Red mond (87.1) shoulder most of the load for the Sun Devils with Mar lon Farlow (40.6) also getting some carries. “Redmond may be a little more explosive,” Bellotti said, “but all three are great backs. They all do a great job. This team runs the ball vertically as well as any team I’ve seen. They just come straight ahead and run over you, around you or through you. This will be a tremendous test.” Oregon may catch the same break it did last week when Husky quarterback Brock Huard and tailback Rashaan Shehee sat out the game with injuries. As of Thursday it was still undeter mined as to whether Martin (strained neck) or quarterback Ryan Kealy (sprained throwing shoulder) will play. If Kealy can’t go, Steve Campbell will start in his place. Who will play at quarterback doesn't currently seem to be an issue for the Ducks. After his per formance against Washington, Akili Smith will get the start. In an interesting side note, Oregon tailback Saladin McCul lough needs just 32 yards become only the sixth Duck to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Nowhere to run to. Nowhere to hide.
