Water polo finishes weekend 1 -4 Oregon scored seven unanswered goals in its win over Phoenix The men’s Club Sports water polo team came out of the pool 1-4 this weekend in Arizona as it beat lOth-seeded Phoenix 8-6. Oregon lost its first match 20-1 against No. 2 Arizona, then played Cal-Poly tough in the first quarter, only allowing one goal. However, the Ducks could not hold off the pursuing offense of Cal-Poly as it went on to win 14-5. "We did a great defensive job in the first quarter,” starter Jess Paul son said. “We just let go for the rest of it.” The Ducks bounced back in their next scheduled game to de feat Phoenix 8-6. Oregon, down 6 1, came back to score seven unan swered goals to steal the victory away from the higher-seeded Phoenix. However, this would be Ore gon’s only win in the tournament as Arizona State gave the Ducks another loss. Ore gon fin ished the touma mentin 10th place. Rugby pummels Portland 63-0 The Oregon Club Sports rugby team continued its winning ways with a 63-0 demolition of Portland last Saturday. The win pushed the Ducks’ record to 3-0 and lengthened their winning streak to six games, dat ing back to last season. “We’ve been conditioning all year and it paid off,” Alex Sroka said. The Ducks avenged two losses to the Pilots last season with solid all-around play, according to Sro ka. Sroka named flanker Andrew Scott, fly half Mike Grippi and scrum half Mike Hopinger as play ers who performed particularly well. “We were just dominating all the way around,” Sroka said. The Ducks travel to Lewis and Clark next Saturday to put their unbeaten record on the line against the Pioneers. Oregon will try not to look past the Pioneers to their Civil War match-up with Oregon State on Nov. 22. — Tim Pyle and Deena Man ning Duck women defeat UCLA in final round By Joel Hood Sports Reporter The No. 17 Oregon women’s golf team beat Pacific-10 Confer ence rival UCLA to take seventh place in the prestigious Rolex Na tional Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships in Miami, Fla., Monday. The Ducks defeated UCLA 3-2 in the tournament’s consolation bracket after losing a pair of matches on Sunday to two of the nation’s top teams, No. 3 Ten nessee and No. 5 Tulsa. Two Oregon golfers earned hard-fought 3-2 victories over their Bruin opponents. Senior Paula Patterson led the way by defeated UCLA’s top-ranked golfer, Aman dine Vincent 3 2 at the par-74 Doral Country Club. Oregon’s Kylie Wilson also earned a 3 61 If 2 victory over the Bruins’ Leilani Bagby. Pam Sowden clinched the Ducks’ seventh-place finish with a 5-3 win over UCLA’s Julie Oh in Monday’s final match. But the Ducks dropped two of their five singles matches Mon day. UCLA’s Alexandra Gasser edged Karen Bristow 2-1, and So phie Sandolo beat Oregon’s Ani ka Heuser 3-1. The No. 2 Arizona Wildcats walked off with the women’s team title. The Wildcats defeated Duke on a tie breaker after both finished the championship final round match at 2 1/2. In a bit of an upset, Louisiana State beat No. 5 Tulsa in the tour nament’s third-place match on Monday. The Ducks finish up their fall schedule Nov. 14 to 16 at the Golf World Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C.
