Graduation 1997 Amanda: Historic podium is demolished ■ Continued from Page 13B to do with the changing of an al ready-formed memory. Tom out are those ugly gray stairs which so many of us mean dered up and down throughout college. Ripped up are the bricks which laid out the courtyard where on so many sunny days the campus resonated with the sounds of rallies, the beat of drums and the squawk of roller blades avoiding the common pedestrian. In Douglas Coupland’s book Polaroids from the Dead, he de votes a chapter to his favorite bridge which the city of Vancou ver, B.C. is talking about tearing down in order to build a bigger and better one. “People speak of Lions Gate Bridge as being merely a tool,” Coupland writes, “a piece of in frastructure that can be casually deleted, plundered from our memories with not a second thought to the consequences its vanishing might have on our in terior lives.” See, somehow it’s different than going back and seeing that change. It’s like, “Hey, this is my mem ory of this place and you’re rear ranging it while I watch.” For me, this is unsettling. For example, one thing really disappointing about the current renovation is that they tore out tile brick podium. You wouldn’t have really noticed it unless you knew what to look for. On the ramp leading up to the front doors there was a plaque and a podium set into the brick wall. The plaque said something about it being constructed during the time of many war protests in which students could stand there and soap-box over the courtyard. Of course, that was before they put in the ramp and sunk the courtyard down. But, when I first noticed it I felt a certain sense of history and, while no one has used that since I’ve been around, when I looked at it I saw some body else’s memory. Coupland goes on to say, “The bridge is not merely a tool, not a casually deletable piece of infra structure, and it can never be deleted from memories like an undesirable file.” The memories that we have now are fleeting; we know this. It probably has so much more to do with fear of the real world and a hope that once I leave college I am not leaving behind “the best years of my life,” as so many like to say. I know as well as anyone that as time goes by things be come hazy, names get forgotten and it becomes harder to really capture that old feeling. Forget ting the past is inevitable and should be accepted with aplomb, but, frankly, I’m not ready to let it go Second Annual Lavender Graduation The University of Oregon’s Lesbian, Gay, ^ Bisexual and Transgender auutammai ana support , Services Program is hosting the Second Annual Lavender Graduation Reception!
