e>. ... . . . RYAN FRANK/Emerald Steve Welch, the No. 1 wheelchair tennis player in the nation, visited Eugene for a clinic at the Eugene Family YMCA on Sunday. Frank: Welch would not change a thing ■ Continued from Page 11 Open title in three years. Then, last summer in Atlanta, Welch won the paralympics gold medal in doubles. Today, Welch has earned the No. 3 ranking in the world and the No. 1 ranking in the nation. The scary thing is, he has eight years left until he hits his prime. Welch said wheelchair athletes don’t reach their peak until they are 32. On Sunday, Welch, a resident of Arlington, Texas, was at the Eugene Family YMCA giving his second tennis clinic in as many days. (Saturday he was in Port land giving a clinic.) A busy weekend is the norm for Welch. He spends, on the aver age, only six days at home a month. The other 24 he is either play ing in a tournament, probably in Europe or Australia, or conduct ing a clinic, like he did Sunday. Welch estimates he plays 30 to 35 tournaments a year, and gives eight to 12 clinics a year. Despite his lack of time off, Welch said the traveling is worth it, and he wouldn’t trade his ex periences for anything. Even if he could live the first 24 years of his life over again, Welch said he wouldn’t do anything dif ferently. “My father and brother are ac countants and are slaves to their job from 9 to 7,” Welch said. “I’m doing something I love, and I have friends all over the world. ” Watching him from the side lines in Eugene on Sunday, you can see why he is considered the nation’s top wheelchair tennis player. His game is full of acrobatic wheelchair moves that would make Evel Knievel a little woozy. Welch cannot walk great dis tances, but he does have use of his legs, which gives him a distinct advantage over people who can not, and a strong upper body. His unbelievable athletic abili ty is a sight to behold, but what makes Welch special is his per sonality. Welch is as good a person as he is an athlete. He was patient with the adults and children at the clinic, even the beginners, and watching him relate to the kids was amazing. “It is great to have a chance to hit with him,” said Eugene resi dent Mark Hansen, who is active ly involved in wheelchair athlet ics in the Eugene area. For a guy at the top of his pro fession, Welch was genuinely friendly, unlike many of today’s top athletes. If only tli ere were more Steve Welches in this world. 090 BIRTHDAYS AS>fi Happy Birthday to our A4>n Brothers A<t>£2 Allison P.
