Honor: Award was surprise for Goldrich ■ Continued from Page 1 month-old granddaughter Meghan walked over to give him a hug, helping Goldrich forget his embarrassment. “That was the perfect moment to do so,” said Meghan’s mother and daughter of Goldrich, Gina Jones. “This award is highly coveted and only given after careful screening and evaluation,” Frohnmayer said. Two other awards were also an nounced Tuesday. Barbara Alt rnann, assistant professor of Ro mance languages, and Robert Pena, assistant professor of archi tecture are the 1997 recipients of the Ersted Awards for Distin guished Teaching. All three University professors will receive a stipend of $2,000, added annually to their salaries. The Ersted Award, established in 1957, encourages and rewards exceptional teachers early in their careers. The salary increases are paid by the A.J. Ersted trust fund. The Herman Award for Distin guished Teaching honors senior faculty members who have achieved outstanding records as teachers. Both students and faculty members make the recommenda tions for the awards, and narrated student evaluations are used as a main source for evidence in giv ing this award. Altmann teaches medieval French literature and language in the Romance language depart ment. She was selected by stu dents and colleagues for her “rig or, passion, patience and vision” in teaching, said one committee member in a written press release. Pena’s commitment to teaching and to the environment are a few of the reasons he was selected. As one of three faculty members at the School of Architecture and Allied Arts who created the cur riculum package, “Design with PV,” Pena has helped provide bet ter instruction in design. The pro gram has been shared with 50 in stitutions of higher education in the United States and Canada. Goldrich’s passion for Latin American politics inspires his students to learn, say his friends. Many students repeatedly register for classes taught by Goldrich solely because he is teaching them. “He engages in the world and brings the world into the class room,” said Irene Diamond, a col league of Goldrich’s in the politi cal science department. “He thinks critically, he gets students to learn about other cul tures and gets them to feel deeply,” Diamond said. “He’s re ally an example of a scholar ac tivist.” WENDY FULLER/Emerald President Dave Frohnmayer presented the Herman Award for Distin guished Teaching to Daniel Goldrich, a politicial science professor. r£<^!u° ki ~ty 3i*d*&m* A7! 0! *4. ^^VAJLl^AA o 2JL *J*H °1M n^fu? ^H^U^g. 0PJ.°j:^H 7k% °d/fl-..
