Second phase of family housing nears end of construction The new Spencer View apartments include sever al features that will make life easier for residents By Jennifer Schmitt Community Editor Apartments with doors of orange, yellow, teal and coral will soon be mixing with the rainbow of colors that already distinguishes the Spencer View family housing apartments as the second and final phase of construction is completed this August. Similar to the 132 existing apartments, the 140 new two bedroom apartments are divided into color-coded 'vneighbor nooas, saia frank Gaddini, area director for Uni versity housing. The front door of each apartment is then painted to match the other doors in the com plex. The colors are designed to act as bright, simple identifiers for stu dents and their visitors, Gaddini said. “This is a good feature for stu dents when they are trying to give family members directions,” Gaddini said. “It is also good for emergencies to be able to say ‘I live in the red neighborhood.’” Since the idea behind the apartments is to give priority to students with families, the apartments and surrounding fi£ [Spencer View] was designed so that a parent can be inside and watch their child without having to hover over them the whole time. We really want this to be a safe place for children. — Frank Gaddini University housing area director -99 areas are designed for children and parents. Every kitchen has a window that looks out onto one of the 10 playgrounds that are spread throughout the neighborhoods. “This was designed so that a parent can be inside and watch their child without having to hover over them the whole time,” Gaddini said. “We really want this to be a safe place for children.” The neighborhoods are arranged in clusters around a common building that provides office space, a community room, maintenance supplies and a child care center. The apartments are part of the University family housing pro gram, and all of the apartments’ phone lines are linked to the university s telecommunica tions package. The apartments have the same phone system that is used on campus, Gaddini said. “They can still use the six-plus four extensions to call campus,” he said. “And their monthly bill comes with their rent package.” Unlike the Phase One apart ments, wnich have one ethemet link per apart ment, the new apartments have an ethernet port in every room so students can set up their computers in any room and con nect to the main frame on cam pus. “We wanted to provide flexi Frank Gaddini stands in front of some new playground equipment being installed at Spencer View apart ments. Construction on phase two of the project should be finished in several months. bility,” Gaddini said. “Now a student can put their computer in the quietest room or by the window; wherever they want.” Each of the 700-square-foot apartments also has its own pri vate patio. The apartments are in a con venient location for students because it is close to campus, other schools and shopping. The complex is also surrounded on three sides by a greenbelt, Gad dini said. Applications and reservations on the apartments are being accepted by University housing right now for fall term. “Buildings are going up right now, and things are going very well,” said Michael Eyster, director of University housing. “Things are going much faster in this phase than in the first one, and we anticipate being right on time to meet our deadline.” Rent for the apartments will not be settled until after a public hearing on May 28, but the pro posed rate for a two-bedroom apartment is $445 a month, Eyster said. Because Spencer View is cate gorized as family housing, the first priority is given to students with children. Graduate stu dents are the next priority, fol lowed by undergraduates over 21, Eyster said.
