Heinonen has billed the 800 as a “dynamite event.” Oregon’s depth in the 800 has shown this season with NCAA provisional qualifiers Kaarin Knudson and Vicky Fleschner, and near Pac-10 quali fiers Sue Morris, Christie Engess er, Robyn Sutherland and Katie Crabb. Further proof of Oregon’s strength in the 800 is last week’s win in the 4x800-meter relay at the Drake Relays. The Ducks hope Sutherland and Crabb can turn in conference qualifiers Saturday. Sutherland ran a personal best of 2 minutes, 11.2 seconds in the 4x800-meter last week, and Crabb has already run 2:12.79 this season. The Pac-10 qualifying mark is 2:11.14. “There’s a lot of things we can do in the 800 if they go out fast and work together,” Heinonen said. “If it’s a good day it’s a chance to run really fast.” Fleschner has a season best of 2:08.84, but said it may take a time near 2:06 to make it into the NCAA meet. Fleschner has steadily im proved her times this season and ran a 2:08.84 at the Pepsi Invita tional two weeks ago. She said anything under 2:08 would be good progress. “If I’m just consistent, that won’t be too bad, either. Fellow hep tathlete Jennifer Thomas will run the 100-meter dash along with Henes, in a training effort to im prove on speed. The meet is also a chance to for redshirt pole vaulters Denise Warner and Karina Elstrom to get into a competition this year. Red shirt hurdler and heptathlete Melissa Abramson will compete as well. For much of the Oregon men’s track and field team, Saturday’s meet also brings a bit of a reprieve from the busy schedule as it pre pares for the season’s stretch run. “The All-Comers is going to be very low key and basically we’re using it as a workout preparation for meets later on,” Oregon head coach Bill Dellinger said. Many of the Ducks’ distance runners will be sitting out or com peting in secondary events as part of their workouts. However, the meet will be tak en very seriously as a competition for some other Ducks. Quincy Ruffin will be going af ter his first Pac-10 qualifying mark ofthe season in the 110-meter hur dles. Paul Pappas, fresh off an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7,303 points in a decathlon held at Western Oregon State Tuesday and Wednesday, will be going af ter a Pac-10 qualifying mark of 16 3 3/4 in the pole vault. The meet will also be an oppor tunity for some throwers to go af ter NCAA qualifying marks. Jeremy Robinson was just one inch shy of a provisional mark two weeks ago in the Pepsi Team Invi tational and should challenge the mark Saturday, while Ryan Cole will see if he can continue his hot streak in the discus and shot put. Cole is coming off of a personal best in the shot put at the Pepsi In vitational. Meanwhile, six Oregon athletes will be heading to Austin, Tex., for the Texas Invitational Satur day. The Ducks have five jumpers competing in Texas, and they will run into a talented field highlight ed by Texas’ Richard Duncan. Duncan was an all-American in the long jump, triple jump and high jump at last year’s NCAA Championships. He won the long jump with a leap of 26-0 1/4 and currently leads the nation with a jump of 2 7 feet. The field will include several other of the nation’s top athletes in the jumping events. “Quite frankly, we’re likely to get our hat handed to us down there,” assistant coach John Gille spie said. “But that’s the kind of competition that all of these guys need in order to try and get a qual ifying mark for the future.” Chris Nelson will be going after an automatic qualifying height of 7-4 1/2 in the high jump. Jody Mortimore and Nat John son will be testing their skills in the long jump.
