Repair: Getting an estimate in writing provides proof, Davidson says ■ Continued from Page 1 community residents as well. With eleven yellow pages worth of mechanics to choose from in the Eugene/Springfield area, how do students decide? Davidson advises students first to seek recommendations from friends and family. Yet, as in Miskovic’s case, this doesn’t always turn out for the best. “Some mechanics get rave re views, but then some people will use the same [mechanics] and feel like they got totally shafted,” Davidson said. He advocates calling the state hotline numbers to find out about the history of the company. A re port, for example, from the Better Business Bureau includes the number of years the company has been in business, the number of complaints in the last three years, and whether the company is a member of the bureau. After finding a mechanic, doing some homework on the basics of mechanics will help students in the long run, said associate pro fessor Steve Bender, specialist in consumer law. “If you go to them and say, ‘I’ve got this problem and it could be the cheap thing or it could be the expensive thing,’ at least they think you know enough about it so they won’t go immediately to the expensive repair,” Bender said. The next step, of course, is the dreaded estimate. Unlike Miskovic, who did not ask for a firm estimate, Davidson advises getting one in writing. This pre vents excessive costs from mount ing up and provides proof of what was actually authorized. He said many mechanics won’t want to do this, but consumers should in sist on it. “Don’t worry about seeming rude or untrustworthy,” Davidson said, “because that’s how people operate in the real world.” Bender added that consumers should give mechanics strict limi tations on what to work on and a list of several phone numbers where the person can be reached in case further work needs to be authorized. Davidson said because of the increasing technology of cars and subsequent difficulty in diagnos ing auto ailments, some mechan ics get unfairly blamed by con sumers for charging excessive rates. Bob Olson, a member of the Better Business Bureau and an auto mechanic for 23 years, said he believes the bad publicity that comes with stiffing a customer is not worth it. “We have to rely on goodwill and customers,” Olson said.
