I will feel very grateful if that message gets through; it’s a message that needs to get though.” Since July 1994, McDonald has headed the journalism school. He is about to finish his last year of a three year term of journalism dean, and he said he feels this is the right time to move on. “The timing is right.... Much of the work that I planned to do has been completed,” he said. Such work has included suc cessful fund raising for the jour nalism school. While McDonald was dean, the journalism school gained more than $4 million in gifts and pledges from alumni and other supporters. The peak of this fund raising came when $1.5 million, the largest donation in the school’s 81-year history, was donated to endow a chair in public relations. Part of that gift qualified the school to receive $1 million to create the University’s first Knight Chair from the en dowment established in 1996 by Phil Knight. “He has been the most suc cessful fund raiser that the school had.... That’s so impor tant with Measure 5 and Measure 47,” said Lauren Kessler, a jour nalism professor who has also co-authored three journalism text books with McDonald. Since 1978, McDonald has been a part of the school of jour nalism faculty, and in that time he founded the journalism school’s student peer advising program in 1981, received the University’s Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1982 and received the National Teach ing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Modern Media Institute in 1983. McDonald’s past journalism experiences include reporting and editing for newspapers in Ohio and Illinois in the late 1960s, owning and publishing West-Lane News and Tri-County publications in Veneta and Junc tion City in the 1970s and doing contract photography for Sunset Magazine and Explorer’s World since 1976. McDonald said he will retain his status as a tenured member of the journalism faculty. To replace McDonald, an in ternal search will soon begin to name an interim dean of the jour nalism school.
