Seating renovations begin at Mac Court ■ CHANGES: Alterations include changes to seating and a modified entrance By Amy Palanuk Higher Education Reporter The insides of McArthur Court are looking a little empty these days. A lone radio echoes through the rafters as construction workers swiftly disassemble the ancient bleachers of the ground floor. The workers are making room for new seating for season ticket holders and providing a more modem and aesthetically pleasing look to the aging stadium, said Dave Williford, sports information director for Intercollegiate Athlet ics. On the main floor, 623 theater style seats will be installed for re served season ticket holders, and another 950 bleacher-style seats will also be added for student seat ing. “The seats will be much more comfortable and fewer in number because we’re making the seats wider,” Williford said. The whole project will cost nearly $610,000, but students will pay for none of it. Season ticket holders will pay for the new seat ing. A one time charge of $1,000 per seat will reserve a seat for sea son ticket holders, with a yearly donation level ranging from $50 to $1,000, depending on where they want to sit, Williford said. Student seating will be redispersed in the upper balconies. Seating behind the baskets will also be eliminated because of the addition of new court-level entrances. Approximately 200 fewer seats will be available to students be cause of the renovation. General admission will also be reduced by 168 seats. “We’ie not trying to short change students,” said Williford. “There will be a few more seats for season ticket holders because they’re the people paying for the seats.” The athletic department and the ASUO make a contract every year on the number of seats that will be available to students. With the re modeling, the available seats for students on the ground floor will be reduced, but student seating will be redistributed in the bal cony levels. A new main entrance to the court will also be added, assisting in better access to court-side seat ing, and eliminating poor seating behind the basketball hoops. Court side entrances will also be reduced in width, providing extra space for the new seats. We shouldn’t have to practice in it all the time,” he said. “We’ve only played two rain games in the nine years I’ve been here.” Bellotti and other members of the athlet ic department toured six comparable facil ities nation-wide before coming up with the design for their own facility. After viewing the other facilities, Moos said Ore gon’s will “rival any in the nation.” The building will also eventually dou ble as a gathering place for fans on football game days. However, the indoor facility is not the only phase of the construction. Also included is the construction of a regulation-size soccer field, two outdoor practice fields for the football team (both west of the Casanova Center), a larger Duck Shop, a 200-space parking lot and bleacher seating for 1,500 fans at soccer matches.
