Oregon advances in tournament ■ MEN: The Ducks face host, Boise State, today in the semifinals The Associated press BOISE, Idaho — Oregon men’s tennis defeated Drake 4-3 in the first round of the Boise State Air Touch Cellular Tennis Classic Thursday. The Ducks are 4-6 on the sea son and advance to meet No. 4 ranked Boise State in the champi onship semifinals at 1:30 p.m. to day. Oregon won three of the six singles match es, highlighted by Joaquin Hamdan’s 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Marco Vi cente and Miguel Arria ga’s 6-1, 6-2 win over Stephen Doig. Carlos Navarro defeated Rene Novotny 7-6 after the match was retired in the second set. In doubles play, Dougal Williams and Navarro teamed up to beat Novotny and Rodney Leserve 8-4, while Mike Gold stein and John DeVorss downed Doig and Mat Coyle 8-6. Southern Mississippi and Vir ginia Tech meet in the other championship semifinal Friday. Northern Arizona plays Drake and Wichita State meets Indiana State in the consolation semifi nals Friday morning. UO tennis continues long road trip ■ WOMEN: The Ducks face North Carolina State today in Las Vegas i By Joel Hood Freelance Sports Reporter The Oregon women’s tennis team had exactly one week to celebrate its move into the national rankings’ spotlight. This weekend will be business as usual for the No. 61-ranked Ducks as they continue on a mur derous 13-match road trip. Oregon will battle non-conference foe North Car olina State today in Las Vegas, Nev., the first of three matches this weekend for the Ducks, who have dropped three-consecutive Pacific-10 Conference matches. The Ducks face off against Oklahoma St. Saturday and finish with No. 23-ranked UNLV Sunday. Oregon head coach Jack Griffin realizes the impor tance of this weekend’s matches. “We play a tough schedule, and it has definitely been a learning experience,” Griffin said. “I think we know that we’re getting better as a team.” Oregon (3-4 overall, 1-3 in Pac-10) began Pac-10 play just five weeks ago with an emotional upset of rival Washing ton State. Since that time the Ducks have dropped three in a row and have fallen three games behind front-runner Stanford in the Pac-10 standings. Despite the losing Pac-10 record, the Ducks have quality wins over No. 50 Washington State, Ohio State and UC Santa Barbara. Strength of schedule has also helped the Ducks move ahead in the national rankings. Already this season Oregon has had road matches at No. 2 Stan ford, No. 5 Arizona, No. 11 Arizona State and No. 36 New Mexico. Freshman Brian Cardinal, whose 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in regulation forced OT, hit the first basket in the extra peri od, and Purdue (18-11) never trailed again. The Rams (20-9) had their chances to win in regulation. However, Tyson Wheeler’s lean er bounced off, and Michael An dersen missed the follow before the buzzer. Midwest Cincinnati 86, Butler 69 Darnell Burton carried the Bearcats until All-American Dan ny Fortson got untracked. Burton scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Cincinnati used a 22-5 first-half run to beat Butler. Fortson led the third-seeded Bearcats (26-7) with 24 points — 16 in the second half. After leading 39-17 at the in termission, Cincinnati built its margin as high as 25 in the sec ond half. Butler cut the lead to 78-67 in the waning seconds, but it was far too late by then. Iowa State 69, Illinois State 57 Kelvin Cato scored a career high 29 points, had 12 rebounds and broke a Midwest Regional record with eight blocks, leading Iowa State past Illinois State. Dedric Willoughby added 21 points for the sixth-seeded Cy clones (21-8). Rico Hill led Illinois State (24 6) with 14 points, and Dan Muller added 12. West Boston College 73, Valparaiso 66 Bevan Thomas came off the bench to score 11 of his 16 points in the second half as BC over came a long-range shooting bar rage by Bryce Drew. Danya Abrams also scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Eagles. Drew, the sharpshooting son of coach Homer Drew, scored 27 points, including 8-of-12 3-point ers.
