Lundquist will host business contest The University's Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting the New Venture Competition today and Saturday in the Pittman Room of the Casanova Center. The public is invit ed to attend the sessions starting at 9 a.m. Students from 11 different states will present business plans to judges. Oregon's team of three stu dents will show judges their plan for Invasive Plant Control at 2 p.m. to day. A reception to display the busi ness plans and a presentation of awards will take place on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Valley River Inn. Kayaker will speak about trek A kayaker will give a presentation Saturday about her 2,100 mile solo journey across the Atlantic boarder in support of the fight against breast cancer. Forty-one-year-old Leigh Moor house braved a solo trip from Key Largo, Florida to Eastport, Maine to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and patient support. The ASUO Women’s Center is sponsoring the event. The event is free, but donations to the Breast Cancer Fund are welcome, Mandi Hood, ASUO Women’s Center work shop coordinator, said. Hood said breast cancer should be an important issue to both male and female students. “I think the majority of us will def initely have someone in our lives that will contract the disease," Hood said. According to Breast Cancer Fund literature, more than 185,000 women and 1,000 men will be diag nosed with breast cancer this year. It is estimated that the disease will kill 50,000 people this year. Students can hear about Moor house's expedition on March 1 at 7 p.m. in 100 Willamette Hall. TODAY’S NEWS ASUO filing deadline is approaching The deadline is approaching for students interested in running fora 1997-98 ASUO office or filing a ballot measure petition for the annual spring election. Students running for office are required to submit an appli cation and Voter’s Guide statement to the Elections Board in EMU Suite 4 by 5 p.m. March 6. Ballot measure peti tions must first be approved by the Elections Board and the Constitution Court. Student-produced films will be shown A free viewing of student-pro duced documentaries will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. in 180 PLC. Nine short documentaries written, produced and edited by University undergraduate and graduate stu dents will be presented “to validate all the time and work put into the mak ing of the pieces by showing them on the big screen,” Jennifer Andrews, the EMU Cultural Forum film and video coordinator, said Debate to focus on women, respect “What do you think?” This is the question posed during a lecture, video and question and answer event tonight about women and re spect. The video shows a debate be tween activist Deborah Scroggins and Muslim activist Aminah Assilmi. The event, which co-sponsored by the ASUO Muslim Student Associa tion and the ASUO Women’s Center, wilt take place in the EMU Maple Room from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Refresh ments will be served. Nobel prize physicist will present lecture Henry W. Kendall, a 1990 Nobel Prize winner in physics and a profes sor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will give a free public lecture next week. Kendall will present “Global Prospects: The Next 50 Years." Board chairman of the Union of Con cerned Scientists since 1974, he will speak about the future of the envi ronment and precious resources if business-as-usual continues, His studies of neutron and proton structures, which led to the first ex perimental evidence for the exis tence of quarks, earned him and two colleagues the Nobel Prize. The lecture is Monday at 4 p.m. in 100 Willamette Hall.
