Phoenix .100 131 Tickets required for UO students attending Saturday’s women’s game The Oregon women’s basketball game scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15, at noon, against nationally ranked Stanford, will require all University students to possess a ticket at time of admission to McArthur Court. According to the University’s sports information office, this stipulation is going to be a one-time occurence. Tickets can be picked up at either the Mac Court or Autzen Stadium ticket offices. During the halftime of Saturday's game, which is going to be televised nationally of the Fox Sports Network, one student will be given the opportunity to win in-state tuition for the spring quarter by attempting a halfcourt shot. If the shot is made, the student is a winner. UO club rugby team hangs tough in tournament The Oregon Club rugby team started the winter season off with two wins and two losses at the Pacific Northwest Rugby tournament last weekend in Portland. The Ducks started the tournament off with a 20-5 victory against Reed College. Cal Taylor and Chris Lampe accounted for all of Oregon’s scoring. In the second game, Oregon lost 22-0 to Washington, although student coordinator Alex Sroka said the score was a bit misleading. “Washington is a Division I team," he said. "And we more than held our own against them." The Ducks compete in Division II of the Pacific Northwest Rugby League. The tournament continued with a forfeit victory against Victoria before concluding with a 17-7 loss to Central Washington, which is also a Division I team. Oregon’s next game is Saturday at Evergreen. UO men’s club volleyball team drops record to 2-3 Continuing its trend of inconsistency, the Oregon men’s club volleyball team fell to Willamette last weekend in five games, 15-5, 2-15,15-11,7-15,13-15. The loss dropped the team’s record to 2-3 entering the season's midpoint, and had head coach Andy Isogai questioning the team’s performance. “Every game it seems like we have a different team out there,” Isogai said. “We can’t keep up any consistency from game to game.” The Ducks continue competition within tne Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Volleyball Association this weekend with matches against Willamette Friday night and Lewis & Clark Saturday afternoon. Both matches are at home in Gerlinger Annex. Oregon club women’s volleyball will see action this weekend as well. After two weeks away from competition, the Ducks travel to Forest Grove for a Columbia Empire Volleyball Association tournament hosted by Pacific University on Sunday. After starting off the Pacific-10 Conference season on a sour note, Arianne Boyer appears to he hack in preseason form By Ryan Frank Sports Reporter Like a runaway train, Arianne Boyer was on a roll. The senior forward came into the 1996-97 season with more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and a first-team all-Pacific-10 Con ference selection under her belt. In the Ducks’ first five games this season, she was averaging 17.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, both career highs. Included in that stretch of five games was arguably the best game of Boyer’s career. Against Brigham Young in the Northern Lights Invitational in mid-December, Boyer scored a career-high 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting and grabbed 14 re bounds (three short of her career high) in the Ducks 82-70 win. But following the BYU game, the Boyer ■ GAME PREVIEW: Oregon faces the Cal Golden Bears tonight at Mac Court/16 express derailed. Starting with Oregon’s loss to then-No. 3 Georgia in the finals of Northern Lights Invita tional, Boyer’s play took a turn for the worst. Over the next seven games, Boyer shot 36 percent from the field (22-of-61) and averaged just 10.1 points per game. Against the Bulldogs, she was just l-of-9 from the field for six points in 33 minutes of play in Oregon’s 72-55 loss. Following their game against Georgia, the Ducks suffered their second straight loss, this time at the hands of Iowa State, 72-63. Against the Cyclones, Boyer attempted only three shots in 29 minutes but scored 10 points on 6 of-10 from the free-throw line. Boyer’s uncharacteristic play continued through the start of the Pac-10 season. In the Ducks’ conference opener against Oregon State, Boyer scored nine points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field and nabbed five re bounds. Then two weeks later against No. 3 Stanford, Boyer had just eight points and four rebounds. Turn to BOYER, Page 16 Oregon opens road trip at Cal ■ MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Ducks will have to contend with Pac-10 scoring leader Ed Gray when they face California tonight By Chris Hansen Sports Reporter Since the beginning of the Pacific-10 Conference season, Oregon men’s basketball head coach Jerry Green has preached the importance of being able to win games at home to lighten the burden of having to win on the road. But, as Green is also prone to saying, talking about it and doing it are two different things — the proof being Oregon’s 3-3 record at McArthur Court. Now, with seven games remaining in the season, four of which are on the road, the Ducks find themselves in the predicament of being 5-6 in the conference and fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives. “These four road games,” Green said, “we need to get one or two of them. UO softball begins new eraatASU ■ TOURNAMENT: Oregon will play two nationally ranked teams during the four-day tournament By Chris Hansen Sports Reporter It’s a new beginning in more ways than one for the Oregon soft ball team as it kicks off the 1997 season today with the four-day Arizona State University Coca Cola Classic softball tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
