ISA to host dance for fund raising ■ PARTY: The $4 entrance fee for the Saturday event will help fund International Cultural Night this spring By Angie Suchy Student Activities Editor The International Students As sociation is throwing a party this weekend, and the entire Universi ty is invited. An international danco party complete with music from around the world, a DJ and dance contests will be held on Saturday night in the EMU Fir Room. The dance is a non-alcoholic event funded by the ISA and the University party fund. The event was planned to raise money for International Cultural Night, which occurs in the spring. The ISA chose to have a dance party because many University stu dents are not old enough to go to fit Everyone likes to dance, and this is a great way to experience music from other cultures since so many people can’t go out dancing. — Amita Malakar ISA public relations officer -jj clubs, said Amita Malakar, ISA public relations officer. “Everyone likes to dance, and this is a great way to experience music from other cultures since so many people can’t go out danc ing,” Malakar said. Fast-paced music from all around the world will be playing throughout the night, and there will be a break in the music to hold dance contests and a possi ble raffle. Prizes will include Uni versity bookstore gift certificates, T-shirts and sweatshirts. Snacks will be provided as well. One purpose of the event is to bring together people of all differ ent cultures to experience music that they may not have heard be fore, Malakar said. “This event is to create interna tional exchange through music, not just people standing around,” said ISA Co-Director Julius Dar mali. “It’s a chance to interact with others, and, most important ly, to have fun.” This is the first time the ISA has organized a dance party, and un like many events in the past, they are charging $4 per person in or der to raise money. "People are the key factor in this party, so we hope enough people will pay to make it a suc cessful night,” Darmali said. Rally today to focus on Zapatista struggle The Survival Center and the Committee in Solidarity with the Central American People (CIS CAP), a local organization, are holding a rally at noon today in the EMU Courtyard. The rally is part of a national effort in the U.S. and Canada to call attention to the political situ ation in the Chiapas region of Mexico. It is also in support of the Zapatistas, a rebel group which began in Chiapas. The Za patistas have been calling for the right to grow food on their land and to change current working conditions. According to Geoffrey Garner, a CISCAP volunteer, the political situation has become tense due to the jailing of Zapatista leaders by the Mexican government, which he said is “going back on signed agreements with the Zap atistas.” University political science Professor Daniel Goldrich will give an update on the situation, and people who recently re turned from Chiapas will give personal accounts of their experi ence.
