Oregon-UCLA game: always an upset in the making OPINION There is just something about UCLA that seems to drive everyone at Oregon into a frenzy. Particularly when it comes to men’s basketball and especially when the Bruins come to McArthur Court. For the last three years, the Bruins have come into Mac Court nationally ranked and twice left de feated. One of those defeats came in their National Championship year. The Bruins were physically beaten by a team not nearly as good, and mentally beaten — possibly even spit on — by a relentless, heckling student section. Who can forget two straight years of rushing the court against mighty UCLA and taunting the play ers as they walked of the court dejected. Unsportsmanlike? Probably. But a hell of a good time too. There aren’t too many things more fun than personally escorting the conference cover boys off your home court, hang ing their heads and wishing they never had to play at The Pit again. "We have a difficult time at Mac Court,” UCLA head coach Steve Lavin admitted. “To me, it is one of the most difficult places to play as far as its hos tile, snake pit, hornets nest environment.” Although, last year UCLA got its revenge when they came back from a 14-point second half deficit to beat the Ducks in Eugene. And it was a bitter pill to swallow when the Bruins’ Kris Johnson and Charles O’Bannon stood in front of the student sec tion after the win and did a little post game trash talking to some of the sections more boisterous fans before being led off by security preventing a riot. MLS said Tuesday it may adopt a points system to determine suspensions for on-field offenses. Currently, two yellow cards or one red card dur ing a game causes an automatic ejection plus a sus pension of at least one game. Players also were sus pended for one game last season after they accumulated yellow cards in five games. Deputy commissioner Sunil Gulati did not give specifics, but the points system would be similar to one used in England’s Premier League, where more severe fouls are assessed more points. At a fixed limit, a player incurs an automatic one-game sus pension. Tiger Woods’ mom hopes he’ll marry his heritage BANGKOK, Thailand (AP)—Tiger Woods' moth er hopes her son takes a Thai bride — but said the woman had better love golt. Kulthida Woods said Tuesday that she would be thrilled if her 21 -year-old son followed in the steps of his American father, Earl, and married a Thai woman. “But this is a new generation and you can’t choose for them," Mrs. Woods said. “Whoever she is, she'd better love golf, because it takes up 99 per cent of his time.” Tiger’s mom is visiting relatives before the Honda Asian Classic Feb. 6-9 in which her son is playing. Woods is something of a hometown hero, even though he barely speaks the language. The Thai cabinet decided Tuesday to hold a recep tion in his honor next week and prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh is expected to join him for a practice round. Swing hitter Pat Wallace paced the men’s team to a match victory with a club-record 24 kills, as the Ducks defeated Lewis & Clark in four games Friday, 15-3,15-7, 12-15,15-10. “Pat was awesome,” teammate Brian Berdanier said. “It seemed like every time he touched the ball we got a point.” As a team, the men continued their trend of jumping to a quick lead in the first game. “We started really hot,” head coach Andy Isogai said, “but we let our guard down a little bit. [Lewis & Clark) relaxed and started playing better, but we re grouped in the fourth game.” The win puts Oregon at 2-1 in Pa cific Coast Intercollegiate Volley ball Association play, with another league match this Friday night.
