The 35-21 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday hardly brought back memories of Vince Lombar di’s grind-it-out champions of the ’60s. Instead, this was a high-powered Pack — doing it with big plays, especially by MVP Desmond Howard — that returned Green Bay to NFL prominence and put the title back in “Titletown, USA.” “I think it’s time that the Lombardi Tro phy goes home to Lambeau Field, where it belongs,” Packers president Robert Harlan said. Not that Lombardi would have recog nized the way this team won. There were no pulling guards, none of his classic pow er sweeps. Rather, it was Brett Favre finding the duckwalking Andre Rison for a 54-yard touchdown on the Packers’ second offen sive play, then throwing an 81-yard TD pass to Antonio Freeman in the first minute of the second quarter to put Green Bay ahead for good. And it was Howard scoring on a 99-yard kickoff return, then striking an abbreviated Heisman pose in the end zone, a dagger in the heart of the Patriots, who had closed to 27-21. Howard, the first special teams player ever to win MVP, finished with a record 244 return yards. Not bad for someone who was considered another Heisman Trophy bust before joining the Packers this season. “Through all the adversity and the trials and tribulations, I’ve always had confi dence in myself,” he said. "A lot of people have been encouraging me to stay on and this is the first time I've said it will be my last season, but I intend to make my final race at Houston in June," Lewis said. Lewis, 35, has won nine Olympic gold medals and eight world titles. He he has been involved in setting 10 world records and he recorded 65 consecutive vic tories in the long jump be tween 1981 and 1991. “I don’t know what it's go ing to feel like not being on the LEWIS track any more'aut'm not going to sever my connection with the sport or with the Olympics," Lewis said. Not since Jesse Owens dominated track and field during the mid-1930s has there been an athlete with the speed and explosiveness of Lewis. And no one performed so well, for so long. Lewis’ nine Olympic golds and one silver include four golds at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, match ing Owens' feat of four golds at the '36 Berlin Games. Lewis also equaled discus thrower Al Oerter’s record of winning the same event—the long jump — in four straight Olympics. Late last season, Arizona came into Mac Court and stole a 56-51 win from the Ducks, then fin ished in a third place tie with Ore gon in the Pacific-10 Conference. Yet, un like the Ducks, Ari zona did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. “We felt we got cheated,” Bonvicini said.
