Recycling Award: Moore praised for courage ■ Continued from Page 1 Parker was involved in the Eugene area civil rights movement in the 1960s and 70s and now is a catalyst for bringing together the African American classified staff and faculty to become more visible to the African-American student population, Frohnmayer said. “She works diligently to reduce racial tension on campus through the promotion of cultural awareness,” he said. Moore, a receptionist in the University com puting center, has participated in various com munity activities such as the AIDS Quilt, and she volunteers for WomenSpace and Committed Partners for Youth. “She has exercised personal courage by inter rupting racist or culturally inappropriate remarks in the workplace without creating an uncomfort able situation for anyone,” Frohnmayer said. Silva, the payroll supervisor for the Universi ty’s facilities services, has helped several non-na tive employees who speak English get started on the job by helping with paperwork, bus sched ules and medical appointments. “She realizes that communication breakdown will cause people to feel like outsiders,” Frohn mayer said. “Chris makes every effort to break this barrier.” As director of the Office of Multicultural Af fairs, Sauceda is also an active member in a vari ety of coalitions dealing with multicultural is sues. Sauceda’s involvement in planning the new Multicultural Center for students has been instrumental, Frohnmayer said. “As much as I appreciate this award, I recog nize that it takes all of us together, working in collaboration and negotiating day-to-day to really make a difference,” Sauceda said. Sauceda worked in negotiating resolutions to the Centro Latino American controversy, the stu dent riots at the Federal Building and the demon stration last year at Johnson Hall. “He has always demonstrated honesty, sinceri ty and courage in keeping the peace,” Frohnmay er said. The suspects, described as ap proximately 17 to 20 years old and wearing dark colored cloth ing, were standing in a large group of people when they were first seen by the victims. The vic tims told police two of them broke away from the group to ask the victims if they had any spare change. A third suspect joined them shortly after. When one of the victims told the suspects he had no money, the first suspect pulled a knife and threatened to harm the vic tims if they didn’t give him their money. The knife was described as having a silver or gold six-inch blade with a wooden handle. The other victim said she had $11.00 and he could take that. The suspects took the $11.00 and the other victim’s wallet, and ac cording to a police report said, “You knew we weren’t going to hurt you ... thanks.” The suspects then rejoined the larger group and were said to have headed for the downtown mall. The victims rode in the in vestigating officer’s car around the mall area to attempt to identi fy the suspects, but were unsuc cessful. nKo CREATE YOUR OWN FRATERNITY...
