PFC tries to give more money to handle higher minimum wage ■ FINANCE: Lacking needed information, one student group was sent home empty handed By Dana Williams Multicultural Issues Reporter The ASUO Programs Finance Committee approved four budget increases and sent one group home with nothing during Tues day night’s budget hearing. The committee awarded Sister U Project $935 for its 1996-97 budget. The group received a 10% increase. Sister U Project asked for $960. The group plans to use the money help University students support the progressive movement in Latin America. One of the groups projects is to ship seven donated computers to stu dents at the University of San Car los in Guatemala. The group plans to use their in creased budget money for their Women’s Empowerment Confer ence. The PFC awarded the group $35 more than they requested. This increase accounts for a state mandated increases in wage, the PFC’s attempts to standardize stipends at $100 for groups the size of the Women’s Center and a state mandated allotment for postage. The PFC awarded the Pre Health Science Center $857, an increase of 29.8% from 1996-97. The group requested $882. The group asked for the increase to get more involvement from commu nity doctors. The PFC awarded Black Women of Achievement’s request for $5468, an increase of 1.35%. The Journalism School’s Amer ican Advertising Federation/ Ad Team went home empty-handed despite support from a dozen members, because they did not provide the committee with need ed information. The group’s hear ing is rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:45 p.m. Cross: Judge will hear from both sides ■ Continued from Page 1 the cross in its current location, she said. “It could underscore the importance of taking time and having a purposeful, thoughtful process for find ing a new home for the cross,” Swanson Gribskov said. The Eugene-based American Legion Post No. 3 ap pealed the cross case to the U.S. Supreme Court last fall. The court declined to consider the petition be cause it was filed 12 minutes late. U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan will meet with city officials and people on both sides Jan. 29. Hogan will hear any final arguments and possibly issue a schedule for moving the cross. Some residents were unhappy about outsiders try ing to influence city officials.
