But students working for Sercel praise his researching abilities. “He's incredibly intelligent and remarkably insightful in the lab,” Webb said. Sercel and his students’ prima ry focuses in the lab are to fabri cate semiconductors and study the physics of the material. "We’re getting more interested in small devices,” Sercel said. “The work that I do is very funda mental.” Sercel said the work is curiosi ty-driven, but there are possible future applications like optical in formation processing and optical communication. He is currently working to fabri cate semiconductor microlasers that are one-tenth the width of a human hair in order to make these devices possible. Semiconductor laser technology is what makes compact disc technology viable. Sercel wants to make devices smaller and more powerful be cause he said in the next 10 to 20 years, current silicon-based tech nology will be too bulky to oper ate. Hazardous trees cut down during break In preparation of damaging winter storms, the University cut down three trees during the win ter break. The trees were the last of nine mature trees on campus considered hazardous. The trees posed a risk to people and build ings, said a certified urban forester consulted by the Univer sity. The trees will be replaced dur ing winter term, said Tim King, campus and grounds supervisor. The replacement of the most prominent tree on campus, the large Oregon maple directly south of the Pioneer statue and north of Johnson hall, will be planted in recognition of President Dave Frohnmayer’s inauguration. The two other trees cut down were near Gilbert Hall on the north side of East 13th Ave. — Compiled by Laura Cadiz REAL GOOD REAL KODAK REAL CHEAP Developing and Printing Your Color Film by Kodak \ Exp|es Kodak \ PROCESSING C41 Films Only Please qerlach’s ■HV We Sell Photography, Not Just Cameras < 849 E 13th Ave Need to get rid of that old computer?
