He told Rainey he has hired an attorney. “No comment, that’s my com ment,” Chris Shanahan told the Register Guard. “Please don’t contact me again. If you do, I will be very upset.” Janet Shanahan’s mother, Jean Thomas of Eugene, said she has never thought of her son-in-law as a suspect. “I didn’t think he could ever do that, and 1 told the detective that,” she said. Another possible suspect was Jerome Henry Bru dos, convicted of killing three young women in Western Ore gon in the late 1960s. But Rainey said neither man was a viable suspect because, un like the way the serial killers left their victims’ bodies, Janet Shanahan’s killer showed her body a certain measure of care. ‘‘My instincts, based on my ex perience and training, indicate it was someone who was close to her,” he said. The Shanahans had been mar ried for 11 months. There were some indications the marriage was somewhat rocky, Rainey said. On April 21, 1969, Janet Shanahan attended a night class, returned home briefly, and at about 9:30 p.m. went to her par ents’ home in northwest Eugene to celebrate her younger broth er’s birthday. About 11 p.m., she and her sister went out for about 30 minutes in Janet Shanahan’s 1950 or 1951 green Plymouth. About 8 a.m. the next day, Chris Shanahan said he awoke and discovered his wife hadn’t returned home. After she failed to report for work at 1 p.m. at a credit company, Lhns Shanahan reported her missing. On April 23, he and Janet’s sis ter retraced his wife’s route home and found her car near an inter section. After finding her body in the trunk, Chris Shanahan called police from a pay phone, dropped his sister-in-law back at the scene and drove to an attor ney’s office. A week or so after the murder, a woman working at the Lyn wood Cafe on Oregon 99 — now called Fitzgerald’s Little R Cafe — told police she thought she had seen Janet Shanahan there with a woman sometime after 11:30 p.m. on April 21, 1969. She said the two women later were joined by a young man. An other woman also told police she believed she saw Janet Shanahan at the cafe, but police have never been able to confirm it. Janet Shanahan was wearing a rust-orange suit decorated with gold brocade.
