But Webb’s own life story came to an end as he died Sun day, December 15. He was 91. In 1943, Webb joined the Uni versity faculty and also became director of the Oregon Newspa per Publishers Association. Webb retired from both positions 1971. “He gave so much of his life to ONPA and to teaching,” McDon ald said. Webb had a long history in newspaper experience before he came to the University, McDon ald said. He worked as editor and publisher for newspapers in Ida ho, Wyoming, California and Oregon. “He had a great interest in the success and conduct of great journalism,” McDonald said. In 1934 to 1938, Webb was ad vertising director of the East Ore gonian in Pendleton and was as sociate manager of the Pennsylvanian Publishers Asso ciation from 1938 to 1939. Webb’s last newspaper pub lisher experience was from 1939 to 1943 when he owned and pub lished the Freewater Times. All the knowledge and exper tise that Webb learned in the newspaper field, he brought to the classroom, McDonald said. “He was one of the core of the faculty who focused on good, strong newspapering,” he said. “He had good values and strong ethics.” During his teaching career, WEBB Webb’s jour nalism ex pertise ex tended outside of the class room; he was the president of the national Newspaper Associate Managers in i94b ana presiaent or me tugene Ad Club from 1960 to 1961. In 1968, Webb received the Na tional Editorial Association’s Award of Merit, and he was in ducted into the Oregon Newspa per Hall of Fame in 1984. McDonald said Webb main tained an interest in the Univer sity after his retirement. Webb regularly interacted with his col leagues at University luncheons for retired faculty, but he stopped going about a year ago when his health began to deteriorate, Mc Donald said. But Webb never gave up his passion for journalism. “He al ways wanted to talk about the news,” McDonald said.
