Calendars of all shapes, sizes, styles can make perfect holiday gifts for anyone By Thomas Schoenborn Oregon Daily Emerald f you’re looking for a cheap, slightly impersonal holiday gift, think calendars. Usually no more than $10, they’re funny, useful and sometimes pretty original. You can tell a lot about people by the calendars that are hanging on their walls or providing the founda tion for a pile of papers on their desks. The University Bookstore is a shop close to campus that has quite a selection. “Oregon calendars, scenic ones, sell really well. I think Oregonians see them selves as being very close to nature,” said Cindy Heidemann, a buyer for the Uni versity Bookstore. “Funny calendars always sell really well at colleges. Dilbert sells really well and so do the Far Side calendars,” Hei demann said. Those daily calendars are great for tear ing out pages and sticking them to the door of your office. As heavy as they are, they also make great paper-weights. “We have some fractal calendars. Like computer representations of fractals. They’re pretty odd. 1 don’t really know who buys them. Last year there were only two types of them. This year there are six,” Heidemann said. Fractal calendars: a gift for the closet computer geek. Heidemann also said “Lady Cotting £( Lady Cottington’s is doing surprisingly well. It’s like fairies pressed into a book - stains and all. — Alice Evans Marketplace Books -55 ton’s Pressed Fairy Calendar” sells real ly well. “It’s pretty strange. You’ve got to won der what [the creators] dream about at night,” she said. “Lady Cottington’s is doing surprising ly well. It’s like fairies pressed into a book — stains and all,” said Alice Evans, a bookseller at Marketplace Books in the 5th Street Market. The Pressed Fairy Calendar is pretty off-beat. It was created by some former Monty Python folks. One of the more interesting things about is all the faerie holidays. If ever the need for a gathering of friends arises, you can celebrate Goblin Adoption Day. Once your hangover sub sides, you can celebrate Return the Adopted Goblins Day just a few days later. Evans said her two biggest sellers are the Pressed Faerie Calendar and William Wegman’s “Man’s Best Friend.” Wegman’s calendar has pictures of his Weimaraners dressed in clothes, wearing wigs and generally looking very un-dog gish. “With animal calendars, especially Wegman’s, it’s really hit or miss. Some people find it attractive, other people find it disgusting. I happen to find it very attractive,” Evans said. “Mostly, we get women buying calen dars. Mostly, women buy the weekly cal endars and carry them around with them. They use them as their appointment books,” Evans said. One of the more different calendars is the Celestial Influences calendar. “There are certain people who are looking for this type of thing,” Evans said. “They need their astrology every day.” COURTESY PHOTO This unnamed fairy of uncertain species is pressed into the month of August in “Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Calendar.” Holiday Gift Guide Gifts Under $25 Looking for gift ideas?
