And Thanksgiving vacation isn’t the only long period of time that students may have to spend on campus simply because it isn’t practical for them to go back home — a long winter vacation is just around the corner. Margo Ramsing, an interna tional student advisor at Oregon Hall, said for many internation al students, “Thanksgiving is a wonderful four-day break.” These students often spend Thanksgiving with host parents or local volunteers. However, no formal programs are planned for these students during the longer winter vacation. “This can be hard on interna tional students,” Ramsing said. An international student from Japan who preferred not to be identified, agreed. “I will live in my apartment, and I will be alone,” she said. However, she plans on being with friends for Thanksgiving and watching a movie. Anika Heuser, a student from Germany, will spend Thanks giving with her host family. Heuser compared Thanksgiving to a German holiday known as Erntedanksest. "It’s a church holiday ... you thank God for the harvest.” Heuser will not remain in Eugene for winter break. She is one of the international students who will be able to go back home. “My relatives are looking for ward to seeing me,” she said. There is also a significant number of international stu dents who live in the residence halls during winter break. “Approximately 100 people each year stay in the residence halls,” said Deanna Miller, a UO Housing staff member in charge of resident accounts. Unfortu nately, no food service is pro vided during the break, she added. However, some of these stu dents staying in the residence halls during winter break will get some relief from cooking for themselves. Jennifer Redding, senior desk assistant for Carson Hall, said she and a resident assistant plan to serve a home-cooked meal to the students remaining during the break. A nice dinner at the begin ning of break will help some of the students meet each other and assure them that they aren’t alone,” Redding said. One of the Japanese student’s greatest fear about winter vaca tion is boredom. “I have no plans and I think it will be bor ing,” she said. “I do have some friends who will be staying in Eugene,” she said, “so it won’t be that bad.” Family was another issue. “I’ll miss my family,” she said, “and I think they’ll also miss me.” up to 50& Name Brand Resale Clothing & Fashion Jewelry WASTELAND FASHIONS 18th & Oak - Across from Safeway • 338-8262 * MOVIES * EVENTS * DINING * FRIDAY * BOOKS * REVIEWS * MUSIC * IN * MOVIES * EVENTS * DINING * THE * BOOKS * REVIEWS * MOSIC * * MOVIES * EVENTS * DINING * Creative Gifts i.for your favorite artist.
