As far as I was concerned, everything that happened was in the past.” Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said he didn’t know of McCullough’s past reputation and, so far, the tailback hasn’t done anything to make him be lieve he is anything but a good kid. “He pays attention, he asks questions, he works hard in prac tice and that is all I can judge him on because that is the only way I see him,” Koetter said. McCullough said be is more than ready to put everything be hind him and get on with the business of being a student and improving as a football player. “I’m getting more used to the offense so everything is becoming more natural. Everything is com ing along now,” he said. Despite an early season knee in jury that kept him out of three games, McCullough leads the team in rushing while displaying the same elusive running style that caused him to be more highly rated coming out of high school than fellow Los Angeles running back and now current NFL player Lawrence Philips. “Sollie is a special cat," Koetter said. “He’s got some special gifts that most humans don’t have. Whether that is vision or lateral quickness, he’s got it. I don’t know exactly what those big-time run ning backs have, but he’s got it.” Campbell is also impressed with the talent that McCullough possesses, especially since he still has room to improve. “There are still some small things that he has to iron out but he’s got great assets,” Campbell said. “He is one of the smoother runners I have ever been associat ed with. He is kind of hypnotic when he runs and is very decep tive.” What isn’t deceptive, though, is McCullough’s character and drive to accomplish his goals and dreams, even in the face of adver sity. “He wanted to come here, and that was his goal,” Campbell said. “He wanted to play in the Pac-10 and now he is here, and I think he just wants to go on with it.” “The dream hasn’t stopped,” McCullough said. “It was a learn ing experience for me. All the things that I went through made me a better person. I am more of a man now.” While he won’t exactly say it, next season’s game against USC, the school that gave up on him, is probably circled on McCullough’s calender. “I’m over it,” insists McCul lough, who then said, “It was my dream to go that school so I was kind of hurt when I found out they didn’t want me to come there. People say it was out of their hands, that it was someone higher up [making the decisions], “I don’t really care about it any more. This is my team. Oregon is my team, and I’m happy with be ing here.
