Oregon has now turned to the likes of redshirt freshmen Michael Fletcher (left) and Brandon McLemore to help junior standout Kenny Wheaton enforce the Ducks’ no-fly-zone. SECONDARY COMPARISON ■ MICHAEL FLETCHER CORNERBACK ■ ALEX MOLDEN CORNERBACK Jeremy Asher (right) and Rich Ruhl were key members of the Ducks’ defense for both their New Years’ Day bowl berths. But now, Oregon must replace the seasoned veterans with young and unproven players like red shirt freshman Peter Sirmon (left) LINEBACKER COMPARISON ■ PETER SIRMON INSIDE LINEBACKER ■ JEREMY ASHER INSIDE LINEBACKER ■ CALEB SMITH DEFENSIVE END While Bryant Jackson and Mark Schmidt remain from Oregon’s defen sive line of the past, the Ducks’ heart and soul,Troy Bailey (right), served his final year in an Oregon uniform in 1995. Because of injuries to the Ducks’ defensive line in 1996, they have turned to redshirt freshman Caleb Smith (left) to fill Bailey’s role. DEFENSIVE LINE COMPARISON ■ TROY BAILEY DEFENSIVE END Gang Green dominated offenses in previous seasons, but the inexperience of young players and injuries this year have led to the Ducks’ 3-3 record When Nick Aliotti gave his defense the name “Gang Green” Oregon was beginning its Rose Bowl season. Players like Silila Malepeai, Chad Cota, Troy Bailey, Alex Molden, Jeremy Asher and Rich Ruhl were big names making big plays. But now the defense is anchored by a few seniors and dominated by young and inexperienced players. With all the talk this season about the demise of the defense, people like Brandon McLemore, Justin Wilcox, Peter Sirmon, Michael Fletcher and Caleb Smith are trying to prove themselves to Oregon coaches and fans. Will Gang Green ever be the same? Maybe not in the near future, but with the experience the players are getting this season, there’s little doubt that someday they will be atop the Pacific-10 Conference once again.
