Charles E. Morgan II had been an exemplary inmate when he graduated from Oregon’s prison boot camp in March 1995. Of the 300 inmates who have completed the intensive reform program, his failure stands out as the worst in the camp’s 30-month history, camp officials said. The 25-year-old son of a Christ ian pastor shot himself in the head Aug. 29. He was a suspect in a drive-by shooting in Eugene. Genetic marker could hold key to Gulf illness 2WASHINGTON — A Califor nia scientist says he has dis covered genetic material com mon to Gulf War-era veterans that could provide a clue as to why so many became sick after serving in the 1991 war. Dr. Howard Urnovitz, in a study being presented Monday to a conference of Gulf War veterans in Tampa, Fla., said the genetic marker could point to the exis tence of a virus. The virus, in turn, could make veterans ex posed to chemical agents or oth er toxins more susceptible to ill ness, he said. The report came as the Penta gon is under increased pressure from Congress and veterans’ groups to examine the extent of U.S. troop exposure to chemical agents housed in a large Iraqi weapons arsenal blown up in March, 1991. Grenade kills two as biker feud escalates 3COPENHAGEN, Denmark — An anti-tank grenade slammed into the fortress-like headquarters of a Hells Angels gang on Sunday, killing two people and injuring 15 others attending a party. Police believe the attack is the bloodiest event of a two-year feud between rival biker gangs in Den mark, Norway, Sweden and Fin land. It brought the toll from the feud to nine dead and 45 injured. A 29-year-old woman who died in the explosion, Janne Krohn, apparently attended the party out of curiosity. She was the first person who was not a biker to die in the feud. The injured included Hells An gels’ Danish president, Christian Middelboe.
