Sally Mackler of Williams says her private life is being exploited by the Oregon Hunters Associa tion to build support for Measure 34, which would end a 1994 ban on hounds used to hunt cougars and bears or bait to hunt bears. The hunting group included a biography of Mackler in the state Voters’ Pamphlet, despite Mack ler’s complaints to elections offi cials. Part of the biography said Mackler told a newspaper she supports break-ins at laboratories where animals are used. It also said she was arrested at a medical research lab at the University of California-San Diego and said when her probation ended that she probably would break the law again. The biography also said she founded a Southern California chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which the advertisement said seeks to ban all hunting and fishing. Duane Dungannon of Talent, spokesman for the hunting group, said Mackler’s private beliefs were included in the state Voters’ Pamphlet because they are cam paign issues. Mackler said her personal choices have been made into a di version from the purpose of the measure. “Their politics are in the gutter, just like their sport is,” she said. “I think this will backfire on them.” If approved, Measure 34 would repeal all laws regarding fishing, hunting and trapping other than those set by the Legislature or the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Com mission. The measure also would grant the commission exclusive author ity to manage Oregon wildlife and regulate the times, places and manner in which fishing, hunting and trapping are allowed. A state attorney general’s office review cleared Mackler’s biogra phy as falling within the broad le gal guidelines for pamphlet argu ments, said State Elections Director Colleen Sealock. Still, officials have never “seen any thing quite like this,” Sealock said.
