X-ray treatments may
heal spinal cord injuries
1 WASHINGTON — X-rays ap
plied at the right time and in
the right dose may allow some
healing of severed spinal cords —
and the partial restoration of use
of paralyzed limbs — according to
laboratory research with rats.
Nurit Kalderon, a scientist at
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center in New York, said addi
tional research is needed before
the technique can be applied to
patients. But she said it does sug
gest a new way of treating injuries
now often considered hopeless.
Private film to take over
some NASA operations
2CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — In
the biggest change in the histo
ry of the space shuttle program,
NASA is turning over day-to-day
operations to private industry be
ginning Tuesday to save money.
Officials promise the shift will
be gradual, with shuttle flight
safety the No. 1 priority.
NASA still will give the final
“go” for launch and make the im
portant decisions during a shuttle
flight, as it has for the past 15
years.

Man dies in desert hot
springs after eclipse
3SELMA, Ore. — A man who
went to a remote hot springs to
watch the lunar eclipse was
found dead the next day in 117
degree water.
Kevin Williams, 35, died from
hyperthermia at Mickey Hot
Springs in the Alvord Desert of
southeastern Oregon, according to
an autopsy.
Authorities had not received re
sults of tests to determine if
Williams was under the influence
of drugs.
